im unclear about using different preamps with interfaces
i understand that some preamps have digital outs such as ADAT aes and spdif but
lets say you want an improvement in sound so you buy a better preamp, can you plug the output of the preamp into the line in on an interface and get better quality?

what do you consider better quality? :More detailed?

Get some good/great microphones then start thinking about preamps.

Yes you can. But if the interface i really crappy, then it may still degrade the signal.

Yup, it's gonna be the weakest link thing again. You really have to look at the whole chain and improve the low spots

... which then become the high spots. which means that what Was the high spot before the last upgrade, is now relatively a low spot. which means you have to upgrade that. which means that now what was the low spot, which became a high spot, is now a low spot again. and then you have a Serious case of GAS :D :p

If your interface has a S/PDIF in, then a good preamp with a S/PDIF out should be a good way to go. It's harder to screw up a S/PDIF in circuit than a line in circuit. If not, chances are you'll see some improvement going line in from a decent pre, as it's also easier to screw up a preamp circuit than a line in circuit, though to a lesser extent than the S/PDIF case.
