I'm happy! So I was talking to my friend the other day and he asked me what I was doing (online). I told him that I was looking at tube amps on Ebay. Coincidentally, he was getting ready to take pictures of an old amp so he could PUT it on ebay (he doesnt play guitar). His father used to play guitar and his old bandmate never came back to get his amp from years and years ago. My friend being the generous young man he is, gave me the amp. I got the amp today and I am nothing but smiles. :D

It is a 1971 univox u-1245 bass head with a univox 2 12'' speaker cabinet. My first tube amp ever. Its a bass head but sounds pretty nice with my guitar. I really like the sound thats coming out, even when it shorts out on me for a second or gets 40% louder for no reason. Its beautiful when it breaks up at loud volumes. Its beauty..

Heres a sound clip of a little fooling around with it. Maybe a little muddy.I'm not even close to capturing this amp and doing it justice. This is gonna be fun.




Does anyone know what switching the ohm from 16 to 8 or 8 to 16 does, I feel dumb. The volume knob also pulls out but it says "pull HB" and I have no idea what that means but I'm gonna keep fiddling and find out tomorrow. It's too late now, Id wake the family. Heres some pic's none of the guts though. :)

16 to 8 or back is for the ohms resist of the speaker if you change cab or speakers in the cab.
HB I THINK means pull for high boost.
Nice freebie you lucky fellow.
I use a Marshall bass head (tube superbass MkII) to play guitar through - not made for overdriving etc but a sweet sound none the less.
Don't forget to be generous in return.

Thanks a lot rayc. It definitely is a really nice freebie. I didnt mention that I gave him one of my vintage cameras in return which worked out very nicely. Im a guitarist and he's a photographer. He collects vintage cameras but as far as I know, I still got the way better end of the bargain. We're good friends, I'm gonna take him out to eat soon to try and repay him.

Im anxious to try an overdrive pedal on it and get a little dirttyyy. Thanks.
 
And it's stylish to boot. That's a keeper. Eventually, if a hum starts ocurring, you may want to have it recapped, but I really like Univox stuff, lucky fellow.

great amp you have there ..... one night at a open mic night this guy showed up w/ a amp similar to yours ..... it blew a fuse he wraped the blown fuse w/ foil [every one told him that was a bad idea] moments later than nice amp went up in flames .............. what a shame :(

I am going to take that into consideration haha. I think that I'm not going to use it live until I replace the tubes and capacitors. Problem is I don't know how much that will cost really and I think I would rather bring it to a professional(not that its a bad thing ..but more money).

Golly I'm excited. I love this thing. I don't really have anyone else to show this that would respect it so I showed you guys. Thanks, Erockrazor.

I don't understand why my searches never turn up what I'm looking for, yet everyone else seems to be able to find stuff. :confused:

I have looked for info on the Univox 'Naked' bass for forever. I saw one advertized in 'Vintage Guitar' but of course, by the time I get my copy of that, they've sold anything in it two months before. :mad:

So, FYI, if anybody runs across one, please let me know.

(Also looking for an Electra Rick 4001 copy and a black Hayman bass, Sound City amp)

Looks cool, Erockrazor. I vaguely remember them, but I don't know anything about them.

Hmm, I remember a number of years ago when Fender Bassman 50 heads were real popular with guitarists, maybe still are. They had a nice warm overdrive to them... :cool:

Don't be mislead, It IS really hard to find stuff on Univox equipment. The best luck I have had is on the Univox forums. The official website even lacks information. It's kind of upsetting :( . I hope you find what you're looking for! I'll keep my eye out for ya!

I don't know about Electra 4001 copies, but Penco made a nice 4001 copy in the mid 70's. They get snapped up very quickly whenever they hit Ebay. Penco guitars were made in the Hoshino factory, the same factory that manufactured those great Ibanez Les Pauls that were better than Norlin Era Gibson Les Pauls in the mid to late 70's. Electra guitars were made in the Matsumoku factory, which also made stellar copies of Singer sewing machines in Japan and about 20 other "house brands" of guitars. Anyway, the Penco 4001 copies seem to be more available than the Electra ones these days. A good one will fetch $350 to $400.

I came across this one over a month ago, but it might be gone because the post has some time on it. Although, he never posted it was sold, so you never know....
