univeral audio solo 610 or groove tubes brick ??

Right Now I use the studio projects Vtb1 with the c1 mic for vocals. I am considering upgrading my mic pre (if its even worth it)

I am somewhat satisfied with the way my vocals sound now but I just want Better..

I have narrowed it down to the UA solo or the GT Brick.. is the Solo worth the extra 3-4 hundred dollars? will i notice a difference?? or should i just keep the vtb1??

vtb1- 100
brick 300
ua solo 700

or mmp 2 for 160????

If you're looking to dish out that kinda cash, make sure the rest of your signal chain is up to par. Live by this commonly used phrase:

Your sound is only as good as your WEAKEST piece of equipment

What's your rig?

well i only record vocals so its pretty simple... studio projects c1 into the mic pre vtb1 into my soundcard emu1212 .. with sweetwater cables
 
Hmmm... can "none of the above" be an option?

Both of these units have a pretty distinctive color, and if you are only going to have one good preamp, especially for vocals, I'm not sure a highly colored one is the way to go. If you are only recording yourself, and you try one of these out and really love what it does for your voice with your mic, that's another story.

So at the very least I would recommend "try before you buy." In general, though, you might want to look at something more transparent and versatile.

I don't find the Brick to be particularly colored. In fact, it's surprising to me how little color its transformers impart on the signal. It's pretty transparent.

I've gotta agree with this after spending the last year upgrading all of the parts of my input chain (mics, preamps, compression, converters). I was debating between the Brick and a 610 of some sort and decided on a used m610, which I love.
 
I've been having fun with my new True System P-Solo ($600). Pretty much no frills pre that's clean, is low noise and sounds great. Has a DI which also sounds great. If you're looking for something that imparts "color" and "character", this might not be your ticket - although to me, there is some kind of character there when I compare it to the low-end stuff I've been using (VTB-1, DMP3, M-audio pre's).

I considered one of the UA Solo pre's, but couldn't quite squeeze in another $200. I'm pretty confident that wouldn't have been a bad route to do either, but the P-Solo has made me a happy camper.

Just got off the phone with the local Guitar Center and there are still a few of these spread across the country... got one flying my way for $220...

If you're persistent...they'll find them for you... and quote a $400 ticket... but work 'em, and you can get a deal...

What kind

of vocals?

And what would constitute making them 'better', to you?
