Unique Strings

You know those grainy sounding kinda lo-fi and really reverby strings that showed up in some doo wop? No? You're missing out. Anyway, I'm having a hell of a time trying to recreate that kind of a sound, any suggestions?

Are you talking about like the strings in "there goes my baby" by the drifters?

I can't say I have much experience, or any, in doing this. But, you could try adding gain, AFTER adding reverb, thus distorting the verb as well. I'd record your tracks dry, then spit it into a reverby room with a loud speaker, record the room to your liking, and add gain to that.

Like I said, these are suggestions coming from someone who's never done it.
