I want to put together a computer to run Cubase VST, use midi with (to control VST instruments), I'm wondering what would be the best options computer-wise, and if I could do it for under a thousand.

I want to be able to plug whatever in through whatever preamps or effects processors I have lying around, and to use my midi controller with a VST instrument without delay...I'd also like to run out a big pair of refrence monitors... what would be your sugjestion for a soundcard? how much ram should I have, and how fast should my processor be? thankyou

I can't see you staying under the price of $1,000 dollars.

Here's the cheapest place I know to have your DAW built www.centralcomputers.com ... most other places I saw charge substantially more for the same configuration.

You might be able to save a couple of bucks by DIY. But in the case of the above retailer, I calculated the price differential will only be marginal (less then 15%). Go to http://www.pricewatch.com to check prices of computer components. But beware, you don't wanna buy the cheapest components: 512MB DDR from manuf. X is not the same as 512MB DDR from manuf. Y.

For your DAW alone you could probably stay under $1000 - get only one CD/RW drive, 512MB RAM should do for the average demands, <60GB is rel. cheap, <AMD 1200 prozessorget, a $39 cheapo case, ...
If you have to save, don't do it on: HD, RAM, MoBo

Get yourself a M-Audio Delta 66 - gives you 6 I/O ... at app. $250 on ebay. You'll need an extra Midi interface (search on ebay for Midiman)

So, if you're lucky you'll stay under $1000 - but I doubt you will. Hm ... and a monitor would come in handy also. I assume you already have a legal copy of Cubase ....

good luck
