Unbelievable sound quality and detail

I think that after you hear it, you will never want to go back
-----------------------------------------------------

hi guys,

I need you guys who have 24/96 cards to prove something, so that I'll know it not "mind freaking"

I tried recording at 96 khz in Logic audio last night, and the result was: UNBELIEVABLE.

smooth
spacious
air

And it was like crazy when I applied a plugin reverb to it. DETAILED as heck,

so I want the 24/96 khz owners(especially the delta 1010 owners) to record some spoken word or some highly detailed material at 24/96 and tell me if it just does not kill 24/44.1

thanks

I have a good sounding control room with soffit mounted JBL and Yamaha NS-10 monitors, RPG Skyline behind me, non-parallel ceiling and floor, good bass traps, and total symetry. Not awesome but I can hear everything very clearly. I record everything @24/96 on 1010's and when I first set it up I could tell a difference from 16/44.1. I agree with your adjectives, airy, etc. but I still don't think it sounds totally professional. I haven't had anything mastered yet and I'm hoping that will make my mixes sound a bit more liquid. I'm being extremely picky.

the sound is just so true to the source

Hi,

this 96 khz really is off the hook.

By the way, I just think that 16 bits is a total shame.
By the time you've got 20 tracks with eq and gain change, everything sounds so freaking grainy.

O yes, the 24/96khz does not sound totally professional, but it comes pretty darn close. I believe that one will have to get dedicated converters that also have a 96 khz capability to get that pro sound.

But the difference in sound was totally unbelievable in Logic. I had tried this experiment in Vegas, and 96 khz was a little noticeably smoother, but for some reason, 96 khz in logic sounds like I am using new converters.

hey, roybot, I have not yet downsampled the recorded stuff to 44.1/16, but do you think that the file still retains some of that clarity? that air?

Hi guys, I am still waiting on more and more positive review of 96 khz, so keep em coming.

peace

I definitely loose some of that air when I downsample. I feel like I'm listening to my old Adat's again. I hope I can find a mastering house that will take my 24/96 stereo tracks and perform their magic on it down to 16/44. I haven't done a whole lot with my new system yet but I think 24/96 is way worth the drive space...I'm going to install a removable drive chassis system on my PC so I can archive my hard drives. I have a dedicated audio drive that I backup to free space on my c:drive frequently and to CD-RW after every 2-4 sessions. I would also like to hear other opinions.

I'm just playing around with recording at 24/96 with my Aardvark Direct Pro LX6. I like it so far EXCEPT... I am having trouble doing anything in real time with more than 2 or 3 tracks going... the cpu usage and disk usage is killing me. Time for an upgrade to keep going at 2496... :(

Chattin'

Tell me KaBudokan, is your Aardvark ok? Want to buy one.. I read that you have problems with the cpu and hard disk.. Does Aardvark need a very fast hard drives or SCSI maybe?

Do you recommend me to buy it?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Thanx
FUNKY

Hey Funky,

I really like the Aardvark a lot. My problems aren't because of it, just my computer in general. I am running an AMD K6-3 @550mhz right now. It's ok, but not as fast as it could be.

Actually, I probably exaggerated the problem a bit. One project I was toying with the 96k recording is hard to playback, but I also have a bunch of effect plug-ins on a few tracks... nothing that should eat up THAT much CPU, but at 96k everything works harder.

(I am 99.9% sure I would be having the same issues with just about any card...)

But yes, like I said, I really like the Aardvark a lot.

Yes, 96 khz doubles the amount of diskspace and processing power needed.

I was switching between 44.1 and 96 khz in realtime, and there is still an amazing improvement in sound quality in 96 khz over 44.1. Amazing

I havenot tested the limits of 96 khz yet, but will soon. I doubt that I can get more than 20 tracks with plugins and sends.

hey, kabdokan. How much ram do you have. I have 256 and it helped a great deal to increase track count. By the way, Addiction is still in my playlist and I still listen to it almost everyday. I borrowed pink floyd's double cd album, just to see if you really sound as good as pink floyd, but I could not find any song by PF that I prefer to addiction.

By the way, if anyone wants to hear what I am raving about, just point to

www.mp3.com/theshadyneighbor and listen to "ADDICTION"

peace

Decent track - very impressive.

Of the great tunes posted by folks on this BBS, that's my favourite so far. Great feel.

What software are you using?

Is that a strat? What's the guitar rig?

Great how you let the track flow smoothly without practicing scales within the first 10 seconds (sometimes it's very hard to resist flying off into the realm of self-indulgence....). Need a thesaurus (using "great" too much).

Sure it's "Floydish", but it's not ripping any particular tune - just the mood.

I bet you love being a "Social Chemist" as much as I love being an accountant.

Good stuff KaBudokan.

Thanks Psmith. :)

The track was done in Acid. Everything but the drums are done by me - the drums are loops and samples.

The guitar is a Big Apple Strat actually. I got a good deal on it a while back, and it's a really nice guitar. Two SD humbuckers w/ coil tap. Nice variety of sounds. The guitar is recorded direct through a Yamaha DG Stomp processor. The opening guitar riff is doubled and pitch shifted an octave lower. The solo at the end is run through the Waves UltraPitch plug in - not "shifted" per se, but doubled or tripled, which gives the tone a metallic kind of edge.

Glad ya liked it. I've gotten a lot of good response to that track.

I love tubes as much as the next guy, but your track is audio proof that tubes aren't necessarily a prerequisite to good tone. But I guess that's another thread........

KaBudokan - I downloaded it and LOVE IT!!

I'll be copying onto a CD (hope you don't mind) and taking it on my trip. I can imagine myself lying under the outback stars with Addiction playing in the background. :D

Hey - love the snare sample BTW but the guitar playing blew me away. Yup - you don't have to have tubes do you? I could handle a whole album of that stuff :)

cheers
John

:D

Thanks man. (When did this turn into the KaBudokan mixing clinic?)

the bear listens........hmmmmm

Smokin' tune....one day........I keep listening to all of the tunes posted, and not having the guts to post any of mine....that is the absolute best I have heard, even on my laptop!!!! Can't imagine what it would sound like on my music PC!!!

I have just joined this digital realm of the universe...I have a 16 bit card, and I can see what the talk is about the higher priced cards. I emailed them (Aardvark) and they won't sell the cards w/o CakePro9, and I JUST bought PRO9!! What do I do, post it out here somewhere and sell it? LOL, also they don't have the W2K drivers yet, and I can't live without it. Love the Operating system, you know how networking junkies need their toys.... I am very interested in this card though. Please post more...need more...gotta hear more about these cards...

I am sure that experience, along with, hard/software, and talent, all played a part in recording that, but the end product, did the "card" have a lot to do with the clarity????

Also, Like I said I am just learning about DIGI recording and was told that two sound cards will work in the same box, I just built a PC for recording music, and without hanging out here first..........I bought the SB Platinum, for starting out it is pretty cool, does what I ask it to so far. Someone on some thread.. mentioned that keeping both cards is a good idea, the LineDrive is a nice tool, it has a 1/4" and MIDI hookups in front, and besides the crappy "mixer", (learned how to use it here on the BBS!!!!) that came with the card it is pretty user friendly. Don't like the "mixer' though. Thanx for the INFO...need more.....:)

IMO:

The quality of that track is not necessarily in the gear, but in the engineering, production and performance.

Actually, the bear, that track is the last song I recorded with my old soundcard, which was an SB Live. The guitar was recorded by running stereo line outs from the DG Stomp into a Mackie 1202vlz. I don't remember if I recorded the bass through the Yamaha or through my Joe Meek VC6, which I tracked the vocals through.

I ran a line from the tape out on the Mackie to an 1/8" adapter into the line in on the SB Live.

So, as psmith suggested, that track didn't have too much to do with the quality of the soundcard. :D

The tracks I have recorded since I got the Aardvark defiitely do have more clarity though. :)

KaBudokan,

Interesting that you moved up to the Aardvark. I can't imagine how much better the sound is. I installed the $30.00 Ensoniq PCI 16 last night, turning off the onboard C-Media audio chip (and I use the term "audio" loosely) and the improvement was amazing. Either a testament to the crappiness of the C-Media or the bang for the buck for the Ensoniq. I tried it by plugging in the acoustic (equis preamp/pickup) via tascam and letting it sit there in front of the monitor - no hiss on the recording even with cautious level settings. Unbelievable. Increase in headroom very, very noticeable. Just gotta figure out why everything works except the CD audio.

Back to that old learning curve..........

hey Kabudokan,

I listened to your new stuff in the clinic, and I can definitely hear an improvement in sound quality.
It just seems cleaner to me.

awesome

if a bear was talking in the woods, would his girfriend still say he was wrong?.....

Hey all, just an update for anyone that is interested, been emailing back and forth with aardvark, they say that Cake9 has nothing to do with the price (ok, so Cake just decides to give the sofware away? Where were they when I BOUGHT my copy!! LOL!! :) ) and I use W2k, still no drivers available yet. Said "sometime" this summer, and to keep checking the website for more info. Thanx for the input Kabu! I am happy for now with the SB Platinum w/LineDrive. It is great to be able to check out new gear out here in Cyberspace to find out what works and what doesn't. Laterrrrrrrrrr
