I have an audiophile2496 soundcard which has unbalanced RCA outputs and event 20/20bas monitors which take 1/4" balanced inputs. Is it ok to connect these two directly together? What kind of cables do I need?
You can just go to radio shack and get a rca->quarter inch cable and it will work. The only thing is you'll lose the benefits of a balanced connection, less noise, etc, but...
It'll work fine... If your really anal, at some point you can get a "matching converter", but it shoudn't be a problem... I doubt you'll notice anything doing it this way.
It won't damage anything... unbalanced connections are associated with -10db, and balanced is associated with +4db, so if anything you'll be turning your speakers up...

Not necessarily.... gain structure (-10dbV +4dBu) is a completely separate concept and has nothing to do with whether a connection is balanced or not........
