Uh... safely removing salsa from tape?

Functionally obsessed.
Hey folks,

I discarded a tape loop last night, but I realized later that I needed to reuse it. So, I pulled it out of the trash. Problem is, there's some salsa and rice on the tape, because I discarded it in the kitchen wastebasket. Ha ha.

I'm sure SOMEBODY here has done something like this before. How should I clean the tape?

I'm going to use a separate wastebasket for tape clippings from now on :)

i'd try a cotton ball soaked in pure alcohol

Erk, that'd get rid of the ferrites and just leave the backing tape? Maybe hand wash gently in warm soapy water and do not tumble dry?

Someone out there must have had something similar happen.

:)

I know you can get stuff off photographs by simply soaking them in water. I would figure tape would be about the same. I think I'd let the tape dry for a day or two before running it again though, just to make sure.

I usually use these to take care of salsa...

Man I hope that's not the tape your planning on sending me!!

"The tape left a red, sticky residue on my transport that smelled something like cilantro..."

By the way, I'm going to order the tape tonight. I need a couple reels of LPR35 and I'll order your 1/2" reel of SM911, too.

I've never recorded any salsa music in the past, but, I have recorded a variety of other Latin music and always found that a good bulk eraser would remove all traces of it. ;)

DON'T put it in water. I would just try to rub it off in the places where it got on the tape.

Another thought...or maybe my first real thought...non-fragrance baby wipes, used strategically. Very mild, non abrasive, damp, not wet.

maybe try a tape head lubricant? It's gotta be sorta safe for tapes. You just wanna get that stuff wet in some way and it'll wipe off.

You'll never live this salsa thing down Lo.fi. It's all good as long as the deck doesn't get motorburn.

I was going to say something whitty. But I realized that my reply would only be half as whitty as some of the others.:)

Aw, come on guys! I threw a tape loop into in the wastebasket! It's not like I spilled a bowl of guacamole on my tape deck! :)

I think that cleaning the tape gently with denatured alcohol will work best, BUT I am going to try a few different methods on some test tape first.

Don't you think denatured alcohol might be to hard on the tape? Someone posted the baby wipe idea, that might be the way to go. Dawn dish soap might work as well. I know that's what they used in the early 80's on the animals when their was a huge oil spill. Just a thought. Since you were brave enough to post this question I'm going to reward you with some rep points. HEHEHE!

Sorry, no points for you. It's not letting me.

Can you just cut out the affected section of tape? Or is too much of it affected?

Instead of risking damage to your machine, maybe just cut your losses and use a new tape. Oh yeah, and in the future, don't throw anything out.
