Hi guys, you can call me Ray. So I write songs for fun and decided to make them work. So I started by working with the songs through my laptop's mic and using Audacity to record the tracks. Now, I'm not too happy with the sound, for obvious reasons.I wanted to make it sound better, nothing special just for me to enjoy my music with friends and family. So I recently bought a MIDI interface, M-Audio midiman Midisport 2x2 Anniversary Edition, and two MIDI Cables. I own a Zoom G9.2tt and also Cubase LE4, since it came with it.

I have Cubase LE4 installed, the MIDI interface installed and connected to my laptop, hooked up my Zoom G9.2tt MIDI Out to In-A of the Midiman Midisport 2x2 and its Out-A into the MIDI in of my Zoom G9.2tt. I went to Cubase's Device Manager and included the Midisport on the list and also in the Preferences. I thought this was all I needed to do but apparently not. Anyone patient enough to help me out? Really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hmmm I just realized that this may be off-topic... Sorry about that :(

Hey Jim, so what are you trying to record here? Just virtual instruments or your voice? I only ask because you said something about through your laptop mic, but then you just went and bought midi stuff.

Both but I'm mostly interested in the instruments, I used the laptop's mic to record the instruments.

Right now, I have my guitar hooked up to my Zoom G9.2tt which is hooked up to an amp and the midiman midisport2x2 which is hooked up to my computer.

The midi on your zoom is for uploading and downloading patches, or controlling other midi things (like changing a synth tone on a keyboard exactly when you step on a pedal or something) - NO audio is coming thru midi. Midi is like sheet music, it's just notes written on a sheet of virtual paper. It's like a player piano scroll. It is not audio. You run midi thru a synth like a drum machine, keyboard, or virtual instrument in your DAW. The midi instrument plays whatever the sheet music (midi) says. Midi doesn't know if it's playing a piano or a drum, it's just sheet music. You can run the same midi thru different synths and get different sound.

That being said - what you need is a mic and an interface. Get a firewire or USB audio interface. Windows will see it as a sound card, and you can record from the inputs or play back thru the outputs. Then you can mic up your guitar amp and record the audio. There's a million audio interfaces ranging from $50 to $5000 or more. Some can record 1 track at a time, some can record 24. And there's a ton of other differences. Do some research and see what fits your needs. How many tracks you want to record at once is probably the most important thing to look for.

Are you trying to record audio from the G9.2tt? MIDI is not audio so you can't record audio through a MIDI interface. Try connecting the G9.2tt to your computer via USB. That should let you record guitar. If you want to record voice or anything else using a microphone you will need a decent audio interface and microphone. There are other benefits to using a dedicated recording interface, like better monitoring.

Unless you plan to record the MIDI output of a keyboard or the like you probably don't need a MIDI interface at all. Even if you do plan on recording keyboards you will most likely be better served recording audio through an audio interface.

IF there's a usb connection on the zoom that will prolly work. I have a pod with usb, but I don't use it because it interferes with my other interface. My xp gets all goofy with 2 sound cards..... And if you plan on recording vocals, you'll still need a mic and an interface anyway, so I'd still focus on that for now - then you'll be set for guitars, vox, and anything else you want to record.
