I'm considering picking up a Behringer UB802, for the sole purpose of monitoring from an audiophile 2496. Then I would have proper headphone jacks, as opposed to the "ghetto-Y-adapter-abomination". I have far too many cable/wires running here and there already.

My question is, if the only purpose I'm using it for is headphones/monitors, is it a waste of money? Should I just save my money/bide my time until I can get something better?

its possible BUT! you'll have a power cable which will need to be unplugged for it to turn off (no power switch on the ub802...i own it), you have to run two cables from your ap24/96, 2 cables monitor cables...one going to each monitor and then your headphone cable.....6 in one, half a dozen in the other...the only advantage to the ub802 is that you wont have to get up to turn the monitors off while you record.

distrumble, did you say you were using a mixer?

How does the Y-adapter work out for you, if that is how you monitor on headphones? If so, How long have you been monitoring that way?

i use the mixer as a mixer...not a headphone mixer. i tried to see if i could route output of the 24/96 back into the mixer and then use it to hear myself and the music while i was recording...it doesnt work.....it just creates a loop. i use the y adapters and a pair go to the monitors, the other pair goes to the headphone amp and i have the control room outs go to the headphone amp also....that way i can adjust the volume of the music and my vocals to taste

I use my old MX 802 as a headphone monitor now. I will probably replace it in the next year with a Samson C-Control so I can switch between three sets of monitors, three sets of inputs, and it includes a headphone amp and talkback mic--and it's only $99.
Tdukex Is an MX802 the same as a UB802???? What kind of soundcard?

It's the older version with 4 mic pres. I use an M-Audio card for my KRK monitors, and I use a SB Live for MIDI and soundfonts into the Beh mixer so I can monitor through phones while scoring/mixing MIDI. This little Beh mixer comes in handy--had it for four years, and I couldn't get more than $40 for it if I sold it, so I've kept it around.

I just replaced my MX602, which i was using as a monitor control, with a soundcraft Compact 4. MANY more options for a small recording set up. the main features very quickly:

2 mic pres. 1 has a 75hZ HPF, the other has a DI switch.
2 stereo line inputs on RCA jacks (switchable to RIAA turntable)
***3 stereo output BUSSES! this is the biggest deal with the compact 4... it can send to a record out, a monitor out, and a main out.
2 independant headphone outs.

it's so easy to monitor on this thing. it's pretty much every fix for all the routing problems i was having with my behringer.

Nice looking little unit. How are the pre's in the soundcraft stuff?

EDIT Re-reading your post above answered that question....

So how about those pre's?

from what little use i've gotten out of it, i'd say the pre's sound like the ones in the M series. they sound great for mixer preamps.

Don't bother with this mixer. I've also tried to monitor my playback and as distortedrumble has said it will create a loop. I also had problems picking up radio signals with this mixer. Exchanged it for a Yamaha, could not be happier with the quality as compared to price.

For now I've settled with just using the amp that powers my speakers for monitoring by using the remote button.
