Winner chicken dinner!
A dude wants to sell me his old MACKIE uad because apparently Mackie originally made them.....couple questions before I name my price.

Are these upgradeable i.e. can i buy the newer plug-ins, even though I'm not the original owner?

Are these functionally the same as the new UA ones i.e. do the plug-ins sound the same and does the card have the same DSP power?

Thanks in advance!

Same card - Mackie just distributed it until UA got their distro together.

If I'm not mistaken, it actually comes with several plugs that the (smaller) Pak doesn't currently come with.

Wonderful piece.

Ok, I just bought the darn thing. I hope I can still upgrade it even though I'm not the original owner. Even if I can't it's still worth it for the price I got it for :D

Go to UA's website, I've seen info there on upgrading from the Mackie days I believe.

You're all set Briefcase. The UAD-1 card allows you to run any of the UA plugins - the ones you dont already have can be purchased through the UA website. Most are 150 bones. The Mackie card is the same thing as the new UA ones, just distributed by Mackie. The only problem with buying a used Mackie card is that the previous owner likely used up all the demos (which are kept track of on the card itself). These are the best plugins I've used. Really easy to work with, and sweet sounding. Welcome aboard.

The cool thing about many of the plugs is that there is no visual representation (graph, etc) of what the plug is doing. I LOVE THAT. I liked the graphs when i was first starting out and I didn't know what different things did, but now I feel they get in the way a lot. Can't wait to try the pultec pro. How is cambridge or pultec vs. waves RenEQ?

I feel both of them are better than RenEQ. Althou it always depends from the track you are working with as well as ears listening to the EQ (someone may prefer RenEQ alot more than Cambridge..).

IMO the best plug EQs are TriTone Digital's HydraTone (what a sound!), URS EQs (I find those vintage EQs being very muscial) and UAD-1 EQs (Pultec, I just love it). Also the Sonalksis SV-517 is definitely worth checking.

You will not be dissapointed

These cards are very very good, once you learn how the plugs work you will never look back.

having just started demoing the URS EQs, i have to say that i'm in LOVE. man i wish i'd had those things in my hands when doing my mix for the last PMC.....b/c you can add highend for DAYS and it doesn't come across as harsh/crisp (or anything other than "very musical"). i added the same dB boost with one of the URS eqs on the whole mix that i had previously used a different eq with (to go unnamed), and the difference was immediate and staggering. it made me VERY discouraged about the mixes i've done in the past.....which, i suppose, is what an upgrade is supposed to do. :p

now the dilemma is whether to pony up for the URS ones or get the UAD that i've been thinking about. decisions....

cheers,

Yup :D

I'v seen so much these "UAD or URS" threads and the result has been almost always the same: Get both! :D :D

UAD compressors rock (not to forget the Pultec) and URS EQs rock.. You just have to have both ;)

Oh and btw.. I mixed my PMC11 with Cubase SX3 stock plugins only (+ some freebies from net; SIR, Digitalfishphones, Classic Series). I don't have anything else at my home (yet!). Need to save a bit more $$$, but soon I will have my own studio :p.

nice! i really liked your mix on that tune. it was one of the ones i downloaded and burned as a "reference" to compare mine to. again it shows "it's not the tools" that matter.

i really like hearing everyone's takes on the same raw tracks in those PMCs. imagine if you could take the low end from one persons' mix, the guitars from another's, the snare from someone else's, etc., and combine em all, you could really end up with a really kickass mix.

cheers,
