I am buying a new card and wonder whether simply installing it and leaving the old one in is a worthwhile decision?

Anyone had experience of this and reasons why/why not it is a good idea?

depends on if the old card can do anything for you that the new card cant....in alot of cases, a persons old card is Midi capable and the new card isnt, so the person keeps both......

In my case it's worth it. I have a Delta 66 that I use to record audio, and an SB Live that is my only MIDI instrument. Via its Sound Font support, it makes a damn good little MIDI synth/sampler, so I do not have to go out and buy one or more sound modules to play the MIDI stuff. It's made a difference of many hundreds of dollars in my budget, and it's been excellent.

I agree with Al.... I've got an SBLive and an Echo Mia and am very happy with the combo. A cheap SBLive for Soundfonts and MIDI working with a good 24-bit card is the way to go for me.

It's a crapshoot as to if two cards will work in your particular computer (some motherboards are flakey) and some soundcard won't work together (two SBLives/Audigys will NOT work in the same PC). So be sure to order from a retailer that will take your new card back if it doesn't work with your system.
