I have two soundcards in my computer. I was curious whether it is possible to use both soundcards to record at the same time…
They are each stereo input, which means that in essence I could record 4 tracks at a time if I can get them both to record at the same time (through use of hard panning)

Just wondering if this is possible and how exactly you would go about doing it…

Some soundcards can work together with others from the same brand and family but in all other cases..
If they would work side-by-side at all, it will be virtually impossible to get them to work in perfect sync. If you want to record 4 tracks simultaneously, get a soundcard with 4 inputs, that will save you a lot of time and frustration that will lead you to nowhere anyway.

Back in the day....

I recorded four tracks using SB Live and SB 128.

What you have to do is set up your software to record from both sources.
I used n-track, so it was pretty simple for me. I just went into the preferences and selected to record from the 128 and the Live, but only played back through the Live. I also changed it to record two mono tracks (as opposed to one stereo) from each input. that way I had 4 tracks.

You might have some issues, but why not give it a shot?

Unless the cards have special drivers and cables to sync them up the tracks will eventually drift out of sync. You might get lucky on short parts but for the entire song I would be surprised if it worked.

Hey sae,

I am using Steinberg Nuendo... have you done any work with that? Do you think it'd be difficult to do in that? How did it work out for you?

I have never used nuendo, so I have no idea how to do it in that software.

When I used n-track it worked awesome for me (other than the fact that the cards are made by SB :p)

I recorded using the line outs on a mackie 1202vlz that I borrowed. I bought some adaptors that went from the 1/4" outs to a rca ("y-adaptor". Two rca's to one stereo 1/8") cable to my cards "line in"

That's as much as I can help you, since it's all software dependent after that.

good luck.

P.S. I had no problem with tracks going out of sync. Maybe just luck :D
