Two songs from the forthcoming Genital Hercules album

Listened to both... though the "car stereo" thing didn't sound like more than a rough idea to me... and very "unmixed" too.

The cover wasn't bad, tho I've never heard the original... sounds like that group was influenced by Queen.

Whatever became of "Alcoholic Hobo"?

I'm not really into the music so I won't rate or anything but I love the name of the band....lmao..............Genital Hercules

Rough idea? Um...no, it's a song. I wrote it years ago. That's the way it's supposed to be. What do you mean by "unmixed" exactly? The drums do kind of sound that way, but we had to squash them into three tracks (kick/snare, left overhead/toms, right overhead/toms) and set the levels up front. On the day we recorded 'Car Stereo' I had the toms and kick a little too quiet. Not much I can do about it now, though. I'm already compressing the low end of the kick/snare track to bring out the kick a little more.

Sparks is a very unique band who have gone through a lot of major style changes. Very much worth checking out.

Ah, so you remember 'Alcoholic Hobo' by Back Door Betty? That band (which contained the singer of Genital Hercules, and also our drummer until he got himself kicked out of both bands) gave away copies of that EP at shows, and apparently people really liked it and sang along with all their songs at shows. BDB is now defunct, though, because one of the guitar players became unpleasant to work with so the drummer, bassist, and singer bailed.

Car Stereo

This one has a lot of different flavors to it IMHO.I can hear "The Cars" and "Living Colour"......pretty cool tune and the mix is decent enough.Pretty unique thing you guys have going there.

I'll give you 5 stars to counteract the one star auto fellatio addict bandit.

The wah stuff and the lead-ins are cool enough... and the instro section rocks (1:06-1:24) ... but the verse needs some structure, imo... 0:17-0:41... it's like each person goes in a different direction than the other... though it's hard to tell through the mix what exactly is happening. There's no real recognizable melody... Maybe that's just one o them preference dealies...

I do hear some Cars/Falco/Primus in a blender, here. Worth working on.

Each person? I don't understand what you mean. You mean each player?

I think we must be dealing with a preference thing, because the tune is exactly how I want it. Granted, I wrote this a long time ago, and my songwriting has developed since then, but it's supposed to sound crazy and kind of atonal (although there is a melody; it's in the vocal line).

Thanks for listening, and thanks to Kramer and Hevy as well.

Very original. I like some of the subtle synth touches.

The mix is acceptable in sections, but in other sections I have to agree with some of the previous posts inasmuch as my ear can't really tell what to listen to. This is a sound I've never run into before on this forum, and I'm not sure what the solution is. The guitars seem to mirror each other exactly in left and right a lot, which may contribute to the ear-confusion.

Like I said... in places it's fine, but in others, it's stressful.

I, too, hear the Cars, and Primus... but I also hear a little Faith No More or Mr. Bungle.

Overall, it's a very original. You've got a great sound. It's just hard to follow in certain places. It's like others have said, one's ear doesn't know where to go. I haven't seen any other brilliant solutions posted, and I don't have any either, but something's wrong here. Wish I could tell you more than that.

Basically, I like the song. Frank Zappa! I hear that in there, too. You're very tight and cutting edge... and very talented. I'm not sure what the snafu is.

???

Car Stereo. That's quite a cool song, although it's very busy and the mix sounds full. There's a fuzzy synth sound in it that takes up more than its share of space. Also the snare drum is too muffled. Do you use o/head condensor mics on the drums? Shades of Zappa in there, I liked it.

Tits - I've heard a few Sparks songs, though I'm not familiar with this one. Like the drum sound better, though the snare could still be crisper. The guitar is quite far back and you've got serious clippage happening in a few spots. This one's not a good as your original

I'm totally digging car stereo!!! But it could use some tweaks. I think Bulls Hit is right on the money. The fuzz synth is taking up a ton of space and the snare sounds muffled. It sounds like you've captured all the right stuff for a good snare sound but it could use a low end roll off and maybe pull out some low mids.

Time to check out "Tits" (not my usual Sunday morning activity - maybe it should be)

Checking out "tits". Love the screams and explosions. I don't know the original or the group that did it. But this is pretty cool. Great quirky feel. Have you heard Idiot Flesh? You probably would dig them.

Thanks for all the comments. On 'Car Stereo', I may try pitching one of the guitar tracks and seeing if that helps the mix sound less busy. The synth is in stereo and panned, so I may also try putting it in mono. There's not much I can do about the snare sound, because it's on the same track as the kick and I can't mess with the lows or mids.

Going back to a single guitar seemed to help the business problem somewhat. I left the synth in stereo and panned because that seemed to work OK to my ears. I've re-uploaded the file if anybody wants to hear it.

Car Stereo:

This thread deserves a bump for this tune alone. Twisted! Very cool. Nice tight performance.

Tits:

Another twisted tune! Pretty cool, but I dug Car Stereo more. Must be the rocker in me.;)

Both tunes suffer from a lack of presence, especially in the drums & vocals. I think some strategic EQ'ing would help a lot. Perhaps some scooping around 250hz or so to clean up the mud. Don't be afraid to add some some 5-7K to that snare/kick track if neccesary either.

Did that snare have a strainer on it?:D
