My collaborator and I have done a cover of the Chris Rea song "The Road To Hell". I have posted 2 mixes of the song on this site:

http://web.tampabay.rr.com/msteenba/music.html

Please listen and tell me which mix is better...or what you like and don't like about each mix. This is very important to us, as we take our music fairly seriously, and are looking to improve the quality of our work.

Thanks

You said you were serious about your sound, so here comes some serious feedback:

The good news: cute dog.
The bad news: just about everything else ...please don't tell me that's you butchering "O Holy Night."

version 1: Drum machine is terrible. I've gotten more realistic sounds out of a 1989-era Casio keyboard. The snare is incredibly annoying. The guitar playing is decent, but the tone is hideous. Was there an amp cabinet anywhere in sight during this session? It all sounds direct to me, which is not a good thing. The lead is so terribly piercing to my ears that I had to stop it. The singing has some pitch issues. The recording overall sounds very muffled and lacking any body/definition.

version 2: Drum machine is better, but not by much. Keyboard adds a little, but other than that, I don't hear a great deal of improvement.

I am not sure what to tell you about how to improve these, as I am just an amateur home recorder myself. I don't think a remix will cut it, though. For just giving to family and friends, this is probably o.k. (if you are sadistic). Otherwise, you'll probably want to retrack the guitars and vocal for the sake of tone. Find a drummer or invest in some decent drum sample software to get more realistic sounds. Spend some time reading at this forum and others for great tips on improving the quality of your recordings. Mine have improved exponentially since first visiting this site. Good luck.

alot of stuff is bad but you could redo it. kill the guitar effects and whatever that flanging sound is on the drums. need some better drum samples or machine, whichever your using. if that's all you got then at least "humanize" the drums by varying the velocity, especially the hi-hat, maybe make some minute pitch changes on some of the snare and hi-hat hits. the overall sound is very unclear and midrange heavy. sounds like someone did some bad eq'ing to try and fix some badly recorded tracks. what gear are you recording through? by the way, I'm a total amateur so if you want, piss on everything I said. good luck.

1)O Holy Night is NOT something I did. It is the worst piece of audio I ever heard.

2)I used a cd that my partner provided for mixdown. All I did was add vocals (at this point, NOT pitch corrected.

3)The one labelled Road to Hell 2 is the version he sent me. The other is one I tried tweaking.

4)When I do stuff here, I am midi based. I use a Sonic Cube computer with an m-audio firewire 1814 external sound card, a Yamaha psr 3000 keyboard, and a B1 (Behringer) microphone. I use Sonar 3.0 as my editor and sequencer, and Melodyne 2.6 for pitch correction.

5)The guitar parts are NOT midi, and were recorded in Arizona. I will ask him about his setup, although I know he uses a Boss gt-6.
