Hey,

This is another kind of older tune that I just re-mixed in REAPER. I've had my head buried in it since yesterday, so as usual, I like getting other ears in on it. Sometimes I stop trusting my ears and start thinking that levels might be way out of whack without me realizing it.

Any comments and help is always appreciated.

Thanx

TWISTED STATE OF MINE

Hi,
I'm not a fan of the sound of the bass. It sounds kind of plastic-y? I've heard it before so I'm sure it's just a sound some people appreciate, I just thought I'd point it out. As a bass it fits well in the mix though I find, as do the other instruments. Something about the tone of the snare makes it stick out a bit too much, mostly in the quieter parts, but maybe I'm just looking for something there. The "double ending" doesn't work for me, it seems superfluous. That sound you start and end with? You should check the loop at the end, there's a little electric tick at the start of it (I'm sure it has a name, I get it all the time when cutting samples in half and not doing a quick fade in, "find zero crossings" my foot). I find I'm also missing a bit of contrast between end of verse ("I gotta get outta here") and chorus. Doesn't need much more work though.

Thanx a lot, Single. Most of your comments are personal preference things, as you said. I'll definitely listen to everything you mentioned, though. I appreciate it.

Soory RAMI,
This is all I managed after a few attempts:

Hey Ray. Thanx for trying. It works for me. Let me know if it still doesn't work for you, and hopefully others will let me know if it's not working for them.

RAMI,
all seems fine this morning & the tweaks work well. FANTASTIC mix!
The harmonies are terrific.
I also really like the sustained chord guitar in the 1st section

I like the bass tone a lot. Your drums have a really natural tone to em, like a lot of room and OH's and not too much close-miking. I think that's hard to do well, but you do a great job at it. The vox mix sounds great, are you double tracking an octave apart on the verses or do you have melodyne or something? Nice stereo spread, cool fx, nice guitar tone, I'm impressed! :)

Great mix..nice bass and drums, almost too clean..

The harmonies were note perfect, just you doing that?

some of the tracks could do with duplication though lol

Cool, thanx alot. Ray. I'm glad the download finally worked.

Thanx suprstar. No Melodyne for me. I'm singing all the parts. The verses are just me singing 1 octave apart. I doubled the low part (singing it twice) and the same for the high part. Thanx for the listen and comments.

Thanx K. Yeah, it's all me. I'm thinking about duplicating the whole song. :D

Isn't this the one you did the video to, Rami? Still a great song.
Some snare hits here and there sound maybe a bit louder, but it sure sounds good.

Sounds great Rami. It doesn't matter what you mix with. Your ears are good and you know what you want to hear. This has the Rami-mix stamp all over it. I think maybe the rhythm guitars could be a little louder.

Are you using an accent snare in this one? I noticed during some parts of the verses, you kind of alternate between light and hard snare whacks. The lighter ones sound like they're coming just off left of center, but the big snare whacks are centered. I don't know what's going on with that, but whatever it is sounds pretty cool.

I'm kinda with Greg on the snares. I think the lighter pop snare you use in the verses is sorta incongruent to the piece and alternating between the two seems to rob the piece of just a little juice. It's pretty nit picky, but you're a nit picker.:D

I think the whole mix would benefit from a bump in the lower register...sub 100hz. I gave it a fairly brutal bump at 80hz and the mix really gelled. Might give it a shot and see.

Personally, I dig the bass...nice, tight, focused with good articulate attacks. Adds alot of energy to the tune, I wouldn't touch it.

Guits, per usual, are very well tracked. I sometimes want to hear a bit more rhythm guit...especially on the turn arounds at the end of the quiet verse phrases.

Stupidly solid tune as usual, Rami. Nice job.

Yeah there's nothing wrong with the bass. Rami always has a tight, plucky bass sound that fits his music very well. It thumps right along with the kick. Nothing wrong there.

3 votes on the snare.

It just stands out of place and seems incongruous in the mix ... almost like it wandered into this song accidently and got in the way. It needs more bottom and different air around it, it's snare lite in a very heavy song ... IMO.

On a positive note, one of my favorite pieces from you, R. Excellent tuneage. Levels overall are fine, although you could pull the kit EVER SO slightly back and it wouldn't hurt.

Best,

Kev-

Thanx guys. I'll pull the rythm guitars up a bit. I have no problem with that.

The snare....I'm not sure if you guys are actually talking about the snare, or the bongo with a lot of reverb that I have going in the verses. The sort of underwater "pop" sound is a bongo. So, now I'm not sure if you're saying the bongo doesn't fit, or that I shouldn't have the snare also coming in.

That's a bongo?

You know that's really incongruent, right?:D :D

I thought it sounds real good.

I think the kick might be too loud. I'm on headphones so I can't be sure. But check it out on a larger stereo.

Some semi-weird clickiness in spots. One spot - 3:33. There's a quick bit of silence after "twisted state of mine" right there. You can hear a bit of staticy something on the right side.

Minor stuff though.
