Suck 'em and see!
I need a twin mic pre for recording acoustic guitar. I'll be using SP C4's or the Octava MC012's.

I'm looking for an upgrade from the pre's on my board, Soundtracs Topaz Project 8

Digital out would be nice. Two sets of outputs would help too, one to my delta 1010 and the other to the board for monitoring although I could route back to the board via the delta without problems.

The only thing I've seen if the focusrite twintrack pro but I don't think I need all them bells and whistles.

Budget is £400/$700

This has probably been asked a lot but I can't get the search to work since I switched to the firefox browser.

Thanks, #

Alec

Hi Lemon,

You might want to look at this one:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/386/

I know DBX gear gives bang for the buck (I have one of their 1-ch. pres and out in the field their gear is used a lot)
A friend of mine who is a very serious guitar player swears by the 386 for his home recording needs. It has tubes and digital out.

Best,
CC.

RNP? That's about the best under $700 for two channels available. No digi out though.......

have you thought about saving another $200 and picking up a sytek?

I'll spam ya here so BigRay Ol' Teddy doesn't have to:

do a search on DAV BG-1 here...excellent pre. in your backyard...680 bucks,2channels.. but Decca Designed. David Gilmour ordered an 8 pack as did Mark Knopfler..it was designed originally to replace the Neve Pres on Decca's console. Since then it has become popular as a modular unit...FWIW, I own Millennia, Pendulum, and have owned many others...DAV is my favorite.

Tha BG-1 looks interesting but I'd rather have something rackable with digital out or two sets of outputs.

Any more suggestions?

I've seen these advertised for about $500~600 give or take:

Presonus MP-20
Focusrite Twin-Track

Any good? Howzabout compared to the Grace 101, Brick, etc.?

you can't go wrong with the RNP . just get one of those and you will be set . it is a great preamp for the price.

especially for acoustic guitar

what are you hearing in your chain right now that doesn't suit you? there are so many acoustic sounds out there...what is yours lacking? are you looking big star? are you looking tony rice? are you looking rubber soul? beggar's banquet? (i'm dating myself  )

here's me: i use the hardy or daking as a starting point depending on the guitar (way bright - daking; great sound already - hardy.) then if i need more body - i'll switch to the 1272 - if i need it to kinda suck in a pleasing way - i'll go to a bellari - if i need more presence i'll go to a 312 - if it all isn't working - ghost or mackie.

they all work fine depending on the application. what is yours? that will steer you into the right one...and deamn i want a DAV BG-1.

good luck - the digital option limits ya IMO. i'd personally concentrate on the pre - but that's just me.

Mike
