tweaking my system for speed

I'm running Vegas Video 3.0 and Windows XP. I don't have a good sound card yet but I am starting to do some recording and mixing.

Does anyone have any tips for tweaking XP for recording? I need to eventually upgrade my processor (333mhz). I do have 256mb of RAM though. Just wondering what else I can do with the OS to stop any popping and cracking.
