I'm grateful for suggestions as to how I could get that effect you can find on various records where the whole song suddenly slows down really quickly like someone stopping a record with their hand.

I've recently picked up a plugin called kuniox which does that but
1) I don't know how to make the effects I generate with it permanent and
2) I want to know how others do it.

thx

I'm sure this is really bad for the equipment, but on a cassette 4-track or 8-track, you can open the top while mixing down, put your finger on the spinny thing that turns the tape, and slowly apply pressure, gradually manually stopping the movement of the tape.

Cool Edit Pro's time-strech feature can do a pretty good job of this. One time just for fun I used it to mimic the sound of a tape slowing down to a stop and then rewinding quickly. It sounded pretty accurate.

Whoopy's right on it, that's the best way, time stretch without preserving the pitch.

The best implimentation I've heard of this effect is in the Alesis AirFX. It does a lot of other radical things as well. Well worth the $200 price of admission. (If only it had 'pro' connections instead of cheap RCA jacks...)
