Turn tiny closet into vocal booth

Hey guys,

I have a tiny closet that I was thinking of turning into a vocal booth. My studio is a tiny bedroom and untreated so any improvement is good.

The size of closet is
Length 90cm
Depth 57cm
Height 180cm
with a sliding door

I'm short enough to fit inside it so size isnt a major issue, my friend gave me some regular egg shaped foam that I could use for the walls and the floor already has carpet.

I'm looking to track vocals and maybe some guitar amps, miked up.
So a few questions.
Is the closet too small?
Will the foam help? Or should I go out and buy some thick blankets?

I wouldn't do that. A tiny closet, or even a big closet, is not an "improvement" of any kind over singing in the bigger room. A tiny closet is probably the worst place to record anything, especially vocals.Carpet makes it worse, and "foam" doesn't do anything good acoustically. Sorry man, but all that stuff (closet, carpeting, "foam") is the opoosite of what you want to do.
 
Get out of the closet! Seriously, read all about studio building here and do some experimenting with what you have first. You might be surprised that close-micing your guitar amp works.
 
Search the forum and see how many times this has been asked, ........ and shot down in flames. It's in the same league as "If I use egg cartons too soundproof my room ......".

It has already been stated, but just to add my agreement with what has been said...
Would much rather record in a larger room than a small closet. Not sure what the obsession with putting mics in closets is, but it is really not a great option to capture a solid recording.
 
I built a "vocal booth" in my studio because I needed something to isolate from other noises in the house. The furnace goes on and off, the dog walks across the floor, the phone rings or the dog barks or someone slams a door or..........

I put my guitar amp in there and have a mic input and headphone jack for any singer, and it does what I need it to do. It measures 7'tall x 5' wide x 8' long. It is heavily insulated and has a double glass door so I have visual contact with anyone inside.

I live in a townhouse and bothering the neighbors was also a consideration because my guitar amp gets cranked up at times. I did do some insulating on the common/shared walls to try and keep the sound from the neighbors but it was cheaper and easier to build the room.

I would rather record in the larger space I have available but I work alone alot and the booth works well enough to meet my needs.

Just my experience for your consideration.
 
Closets are wonderful for noisy gear though... :thumbs up:

Yes, of course if isolation is needed it is something worth much more consideration, especially with a closet of that size...professional recording booths are typically larger than that still but the room dimensions are not multiples of each other and its fairly decent sized so isn't too bad of an idea.
