If thats the only sound you ever want, stick with that mic. Personally I like to have a selection of mics so I can get different sounds.

sure, sure..but why?

The same reason you might want to play a single coil pickup guitar over one with humbucking or humbucking over single coil.

As ametth said different sounds. and you shouldn't be doing that to your mommy :)

Personally, I only use mics from radio shack, they get the best sound and make me shiver all over.

"...break out in either a cold sweat or hives?"

Well, the Oktavas from the Guitar Center will give you some sort of dermatitis from the radioactivity (parts of Chernobyl go into them--keep the kids and small pets away).

Sound Room Oktavas do not have that problem.

...Glad you like your AKG, FtF.

You need to try a variety of different mics in similar situations to see what this different mics issue is all about. I'd hazard that if you were to apply the solidtube alongside one of our friend's Radio Shack mics in identical circumstances then differences would immediately become apparent to you. Mics have different responses, no two models measure identically, but most importantly they have characteristics that reveal an aptitude for certain tasks. When you get a nice collection together then you put yourself in a position to match aptitude to application or even mismatch it purely for effect. An SM57 is a good snare mic and certain favourites are frequently used for kick drums but many extremly expensive large condensers are also used for these purposes to stunning effect.
Communicating mic character is difficult because there is so much personal appraisal and appreciation involved. To start you have to have used a selection just so you can get some refernces together and, more importantly, to get a vocabulary together.
The process is enlightening but also gets you to listen in a different way.
You can never have too many mics.

well, i am an admitted mic whore. i absolutely love the feel of a great microphone, and have been through a bunch on them, from neumann u87s, km184s, tlm103s (and a shiveringly ecstatic one-night affair with a u47), coles 4038 ribbons, atm 4033 and 4050s, akg c3000s and c1000s, sennheiser 421s, royer r121 ribbons, and a shit-load of other dynamics. my current favorite are the royers - just pulling them out of their boxes makes me feel like the whole session is going to be good - those mics make everything sound fantastic. i use them alone on strings and horns, i use them as blumlein pairs for live ensembles, i use them in conjunction with dynamics for drums, i use them in conjunction with condensers for everything else. the combination of a ribbon and a condenser can give you an incredible variety of sounds and taking them to separate tracks provides an amazing amount of flexibility and control during mixing. the construction of mics like the royers, the coles, and most all of the neumanns is so wonderfully solid and heavy, you just know you've got the heart of a good recording in your hands.

jnorman, you old mic whore, how are you? Good to see you back!

Yeah, I've started to develop a real fondness for gear that produces good sound for me. Everone admits to being a gear slut, but actually *loving* your equipment? I'm sure the condition's not clinical... I'm sure it's just a positive relationship that yields the best results...

Oh, and yes, I'm convinced about the Royer ribbon, too. I want to use it with a small condenser, similarly excellent. My wife's not quite convinced yet, but what does she know? :)
