I recently read somewhere that tube amps do not require a seperate preamp. Is it true that the power supply or the the mic has enough gain to eliminate the need for a seperate outboard preamp? If so how would one control the gain?

They do require a preamp. What they don't require is the phantom power, since the tube mic's power supply handles that job.

Except for the Gefell UM900 and AT3060, which run the tube off phantom.

One of them costs a little more than the other ;)

When I had a Neuamnn M149 tube mic, I could plug it right into the DI input on my mic preamp. If I plugged i into the mic input I didn't need much gain at all.
