im going to get the nt 1. Im wondering if a pre amp would be a good idea or not. im not sure whether or not it will be a big sound improvement .and if so,, would it be a good idea to get a tube preamp? ive seen them for cheap on ebay. or should i just forget about a preamp alltogether?

well you need some sort of preamp in order to amplify the mic signal. wether it's a tube pre-amp or not is up to you. good luck.

i have an md8 . i think it has a preamp . but im wondering about a tube pre amp .

If you have a mic pre already, then try that first, you don't need to buy anything until you decide the sound you have is not good enough.
My advice is to get the. NT2 instead of the NT1, it has switchable polar patterns. Very useful.........
Also if you decide to get a tube preamp, quote the model here and get everyones advice...........just because it says tube, doesn't mean it is good.

i dont have the money for an nt 2,,,,but the nt 1 will still be a big difference from the radio shack mic i got now. ive recorded with my md8 already. if thats using the "pre amp" then i did it. if theres some special thing i gotta do to use it,, someone let me know,, but i think just recording with a mic in channel 1 does it. (i could be wrong)

if it's a mic input on channel 1, then it is a mic pre. An NT1 is a condensor mic which requires phantom power (all done in the same cable). I don't know anything about the md8..........anyone else know if it has phantom???

I don't know about the md8 either, but I've recorded using an NT-1 through solid-state pres, and through different tube pres, and although it works just fine and sounds good both ways, I like the sound better through the tube pres. Even through a cheap ART Tube MP, I like the sound better than through the solidstate pres in my Alesis mixer.
