They amplify things. Make 'em louder. That's why they're called amplifiers.

C'mon, CR, you can be more specific than that! They amplify ELECTRICAL SIGNALS! :D

Oh, and we could add, "by using electronic vacuum tubes".

Actually you guys aren't quite correct.

Tube amps are for space heating and throwing off cliffs.

And the elderly. Tube amps and protools are for the elderly.

Are you kidding?

p.s., about the tube amps, not so much the protools.

They're for when you finally know exactly what you want for a sound and you finally realize that there's only one way to get it. Everything else is a sample of the real thing. But use digital stuff first! It's way cheaper, it usually sounds great, and when you finally get pissed with digital limitations, then you're ready for a tube amp. When that day comes, you'll be pacing the floor until the amp is built.

Mine's getting delivered this Saturday - by UpstateSteve! The guy is coming all the way from New York with it; I snatched the first one off his line. All hand wired, maple case, stainless steel chassis, Mullard and military spec tubes, one on / off switch, one volume control, and one jack. Somewhere around 15 - 20 watts, depending on the tubes. It's about as pure a thing as you can imagine. And believe me, I'm pacing the floor.
