Hey all, I have recorded a minidisc full of my own music which I would like to transfer to CDs to give to friends. I figure the easiest, cheapest way is to use a computer, only I have no idea how to get the music from my minidisc to my hardrive with good sound quality. Do I need to purchase a software program to record through the soundcard input? Any suggestions would help! Thanks

Benny

Does your PC have one or two CD drives? Does one of these burn discs? (CDRW)?

If so you could get a free ripping program - rip it to your HD as .wav files. Then take a program like Nero and...

Create a disc image of your compilation to your HD then burn the image to the CDR. If you have two drives you can burn drive to drive...

Nero is like 50 bucks US

Rip away my friend...

Do you know how to connect your MiniDisc to your Computer?

You will need to buy a cable to connect the two units. :)

Pick up a 1/8" stereo male to 1/8" stereo male cable.

1/8" = 35mm :)

Out of the minidisc into the LINE IN on your computer.

zip has already provided you with a link to some good freeware/shareware. :D

peace...

Almost forgot to mention, ..... BennyB

WELCOME TO THIS BBS. :D

DOH!!!

And here I thought minidiscs were the smaller style CDR's which fit into the tray...:o

Thanks for clarifying for him Spin...

minidisc to computer

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies! I have so far managed to connect my md player/recorder to the line in on my computer. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to get the computer to store the music on the hard drive so that I can burn it onto cds. So far, I can only get the computer to record (via Sound Recorder ) through the mic input. Do I need to tell the computer to recieve audio from the line in, or am I just being an idiot? It's ok, I can take it. If I understand y'all correctly, I need to download some shareware which will allow me to convert my music to a .wav file through the computer's line in. I'm going to go check out your link now...thanks again!
...One more question. Once I have recorded the md to the computer, I will be wanting to burn multiple copies. Is it best to burn many copies off of one master disc or to burn each disc straight off the hard drive?? Thanks alot, you all are the best help I've found so far regarding my problem. Keep it up--

Nope...

"Do I need to tell the computer to recieve audio from the line in, or am I just being an idiot? "

...you are right on. Right click on the little speaker on the taskbar and open volume controls. From there select line in volume control and set the recording volume so it doesn't clip (go over digital zero).

These should record straight to your hard drive as .wav files. I was thinking (incorrectly) that you would need to rip them using a program like Audiograbber...

You will still need a CD burning program (Nero or EZ CD creator) to compile them as an image file (HD copy). If your PC came with a burner you may already have the software.

From there use the same program to burn the image onto your CDR. Nero has a "wizard" which will guide you through the process.

Nero isn't free but not too bad for $50 US. You might be able to find a free or demo program on hitsquad. I believe the upgrade to MusicMatch Jukebox does all this as well and for like $29 isn't a bad deal either. It also encodes / decodes MP3's. You can find it at www.musicmatch.com

Personally I have found that burning from a HD image to make multiple copies doesn't create as many coasters...but if you have 2 drives you can make a master and burn drive to drive.

Hope this helps...

One more thing...

I don't know what kind of soundcard you have but for my "built-in" Soundblaster card do this...

-right click on the speaker
-open volume controls
-select options
-select properties
-select recording
-only check the line-in box
-set your recording level....

Man I'm glad I have my MOTU now.... :D
