Hi to all!!
I am new here and have been reading and reading. I have my mixer hooked up into a M audio delta 1010 interface and that goes into my computer and I have loaded Cubase SX 2.0 I am just trying to even see a level on the sound on cubase. I got a dvd that shows some stuff so I know sound works and internal drum machine (lm7). I have my mic plugged in the board and I am trying to get a level so I can start to record but I get zippoooooooo.
When I hit record the thing moves left to right but no level and I do see and hear the level from the board through a monitor from the mixer.
I opened cubase and went to new project and went to 24 track audio. Everything I try to do after that seems wrong. Can someone help a newbie and I am sorry for asking so simple of a question. After reading many posts for weeks, you sure all know a lot and I just hope to pick your brain a lil.
Thanks
Stacy

You should have a getting started guide that came with your software. That will take you through the basics of getting everything configured to record.

In general terms, you need to make sure that the 1010 is selected as the input recording device within the cubase software. There should be a "Devices" menu that will allow you to select this. If the 1010 doesn't show up as an available input device, you need to configure a new device and set it up in cubase. Again, the getting started guide should be able to walk you through this.

Once you have the soundcard set up properly, you'll need to make sure the input for the track you want to record is the same input you are using on the 1010 (1,2,3,4, etc.). If that is all correct and you have enabled recording on that track/channel, then you should see the meters move when you make noise in your mic. If you don't see the noise in cubase, you can't record it.

Other things to check: if it's a condenser mic, make sure phantom power is enabled; check cables, etc. to make sure everything is in working order.

When I got the computer it had software on it as I got it as a package. Alas, no manual.....
I did go to devices and I see the 1010 I also see mp4 401 they are both active.
I can hear the vs drums (lm7) and the click track thru my system so something must be close but just not right?
I then open project>add track>audio That is right I am guessing since it seems logical.
I did just order a book from ignite? that they say is good?
I just want to get started though.

That makes no sense to me. If it is a full version of the software, it should have online support and a viewable/printable manual in the help menu.

In your mixer view, at the top of the channel, you need to select the input channel from a drop-down. Select whatever channel to which you have your mic connected.

Here's what originally tripped me up with the 1010lt.. the 2 xlr inputs are channel 1 and 2, and if you're going in with rca it's channel 3+4, 5+6, etc.

you may need to add another stereo bus in cubase so that you can select channel 3 (or anything above 2, really...) as the input source for your track.

adapt that advice to the 1010, i've never used it but i'll assume that it works in basically the same way with regard to input busses.

Ok I cant do the cut and paste thing with words like you guys can so let me try this LOL

Scrubs: The software was on the puter when I made the purchase as I was told it would be good for music. I have the help at the top but didnt get a maual per say for the program :(
Now what may help my problem is ...you said in the mixer view... I only see mixers under the drop down at the top for devices. There are a few mixers. Which one do I use to set my incoming channel (which I have a feeling is my problem) Before asking this I have tried them all and cant find a drop down menu that is for sub groups or channels? Any help on that since it might be a huge prob?

Shiatzu: Where can I add more buss from? Or are we kinda talking about what Scrubs mentioned above?

Thanks for all the help!!!!!

ok, go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - "Maudio Delta Audio"

here's what you want (probably):

Chapter 1: Hardware setup

1. make sure that all of the channels in the "Monitor Mixer" tab are turned up as high as they can (0.0), make sure that none of the channels are muted.

2. go to patchbay/router. HW out 1/2 should have Wavout 1/2 selected (same goes for HW out 3/4 to wavout 3/4, make sure all your stereo pairs are set up like that). H/W out S/pdif should be on wavout s/pdif

3. plug your instrument/whatever into a channel, make note of what channel it is. check the maudio delta audio control panel and make sure that you're getting signal on the input channel (you might have to scroll right to see the inputs in the maudio mixer).. once you see that you're getting signal, open up cubase.

chapter 2: Cubase

1. if you're plugged into channel 1 or 2, you're probably good to go. open up the mixer in cubase after creating a mono track. assign that track to the channel input (usually it'll be BUS 1 - Left channel or Right channel. Left is channel 1 and right is channel 2). If you've got more channels you want to record you need to create more busses.

2. if you need more busses (basically, what you need to hear channels 3 and up) go to "Devices" then "VST Connections".. from there right click on the bus window and choose "add bus" then choose "stereo".

3. to set up those tracks, in the cubase mixer you should have a choice between the different busses (bus 2 left would be channel 3, bus 2 right would be channel 4, etc)... select the bus that matches your desired input.

hope that helps.

OK I went to the hardware set up and it was as it should be from the last post.
Just so I have all info out there, I have the 8 ins on the interface as my 8 buss out on my board. And then I have my 8 returns as mono inputs on the last 8 channels on the board.
When you say make a mono track and then..... I AM LOST at the mono track cause I cant get a signal to show on cubase.
I open new project>empty>have it saved to a folder>open project and go to add track and add audio track I selecet mono for my config.
On the far left for in and out it says left-stereoIn and for the out it says stereo out I dont see any M audio options
I have tried to get a siganl using a mic and a guitar.
I 'think" I understand some of the stuff I have read but w/o getting a level I cant try anything else....
Does any of this make sense? LOL

Thanks again

firstly, in the maudio control panel/mixer thing(not in cubase, in the computer's "control panel") are you getting signal? if you're plugging a guitar or something into channel 1 is the channel 1 input showing any level? ...if that's not working then you're not going to get cubase to work. first things first.

oooops I am sorry I didnt check it the first time.
NO I get No signal???
Ok let me say that I do get sound from the computer via the m audio soundcard via the interface when I just want to play a mp3 or cd

So it is close? but not a cubase problem? Do I need to find an M audio forum?
Or is it sound set up on the computer somewhere else?
Guess who is lost and asking lots of questions again!!

Check through the maudio manual and make sure you're getting signal (doesn't have to be through the speakers.. the channel just has to give you level when you're playing into it).. once that's fixed, i'll walk you through it.

I may have the manual memorized I have read it so much (kidding). I am looking it through it and maybe dinner will give me a new perspective.

well, this is raising my post count so i'll help you out as much as needed... gotta love being bored at work.

Is there a prize for the most postings today? LOL
OKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
I now have a level on my master volume on the m audio delta control panel. BUT it goes to to between -24 and -18 when I sing a song. Does that seem like the level it should be? The mixer is set to the level we use for the live sound so I was guessing it should be similar?
Now the master volume will show a signal and only H/W In 5/6 and H/W In 7/8?
Is that right? I guess maybe I thought it would be wavout 1/2 that would show.
I also cant send to anything other then 5/6 and 7/8. Cant send to 1/2 or 3/4 that seems odd. I have tried sending via all the subs (8 buss) I have.

Have I now bored you more then work?

go to devices - device setup (in cubase). then select VST Inputs. how many ports is it showing?

well, then if they're showing all of them, make sure you add the busses to the list on the mixer inputs (as i mentionned in my novel-length post above) and you should get signal while tracking. keep in mind that you'll need to click on the little speaker icon to hear it in the monitor, of course.

Ok in trying to understand somethings I ask this.... in the control panel M audio the master volume does react to signal. Should the H/W In 5/6 level react if i am using buss 5 or 6 from the board? Same for HW 7/8 to correspond with buss 7/8? I also want to verify before I try to move on that it shouldnt be the WavOut that lights that corresponds with the buss as i asked above.
If thats all correct, GREAT but for some reason I cant send buss 1-4 and I may have to ask the board people that question. I guess i am trying to narrow down the issues as I have read people say and then go from there?
Hope that makes sense.....
Even being lost I am learning and thank you....

basically, inputs 1 through 10 on your soundcard's breakout box correspond to HW in 1-10 (eg. input 3 on the breakout box is HW in 3)

so, since you seem to be getting level on 5,6,7,8 then you'd want those to be your input sources in cubase. you can either add mono busses in cubase and select 5-8 as its input source, or you can pair them in stereo busses (then input 3 would be Bus 2 left, input 4 would be Bus 2 right, etc), it's up to you; whichever one you find easier.

anyways, make sure that the channel you're recording has the matching input bus selected in the mixer, which corresponds to the matching input on your breakout box.

if that doesn't work, we'll try something else.

Ok what I was missing was WHERE DO I ADD THE BUS but I see it when you drop down to VST connections.
I made up a 5 and a 6 since those sub groups work on the board and had it return the play back to 7& 8 and the only pron was it PLAYED BACK MY VOICE I RECORED hahahaha I was hoping it could fix it but thats a job for another day.
So now I have record understanding as far as adding buss and assigning..
THATS HUGE !!!!!
Thank you soooooooo much
I purchased a book by Ignite about cubase and i will read that later.
I am gonna see if I can find idea's why my 1st 4 sub groups dont send but with this board I feel good it mwill get resolved.
THANKS AGAIN

Stacy
