I'm away from my digital recorder all month and have rigged a setup to record. This is what I've got: an 8-track mixer and two old tape decks. So I've figure in order to multi-track, I can run one deck into the mixer and one out, running it in when I want to add tracks while recording. So my question is, what is the best way using a setup like this to achieve good sound quality? Should I try not to record over pre-recorded tape, does this significantly diminish quality? Is there a certain quality tape to use? Probably at most, I'll have four overdubs on top of what is originally laid down. Should I have a tape for each overdub, or will two do the trick with no loss in quality? Any info will help. Thanks.

your gonna have alot of quality loss if you do this. if your into electronics at all, how about making one tape deck control the other? so essentially you'll have a 4 track recorder...

Two HQ-casettes will suffice.. just use all the space on both sides of it. That way you can also step back if you discover something you want to change.

The sound quality will be touchy anyways, since everytime you send the signal out of one deck into the other you lose quality, but the tape should be fine if you keep recording over it, that won't make it degrade too much, although the idea about going one take after another on each tape is a good idea also. (Now THAT's a run on sentence if I ever wrote one!)

P.S - Portastudio's used are cheaper and smaller.
