Here's a new tune we just finished working on this afternoon, called Try It Again.
This is our first time using an AKG C414 XLS mic on vocals through an ISA One preamp. Would be nice to get some feedback on how the vocals are mixed as well as the rest.
Hamilton Steele - Try It Again

Gerry,
The vocals blend pretty well but the lead vox are a little loud.
The beginning of the song is very abrupt.
The ongoing lead licks seem to have the wrong tone for the mix as they seem to be half buried and then bits pop up.

Guitars heavy around 200 to 400Hz. Bass has no definition. Vocals sound OK but needs a low cut. It is overpowering the other instruments.

The kick has no balls to cut through which makes the tune not able to have a drive. The snare is thin for my taste and it also does not drive the song.

I would start with drums and bass alone. Make that work then fit the guitars and vocals in.

Overall the performance is really good. There just seems to me that the placement for each instrument is not right yet.

This is not my typical genre, so my advice could be redundant to you. Take it for what it is worth to you and nothing more.

:)

I do like the tune.

I think Jimmy covered most everything on the mix.

I hear some pitchiness in the harmonies which I find surprising coming from you. You've always nail the vocal takes in the past. Makes me start to think you are human after all.

I'd like to see the arrangement changed up a bit. Add more riffs, fills or counter melodies during 2nd half of verses. Start out simpler and build as you go along. Stuff like that. Straight up strumming and repeating riffs can get boring quickly.

Having said all that, I like the song. Lots o' potential. Kind of a hybrid country-rock tune.

Hey thanks for the feedback guys - lot's of good pointers about things to work on and remix. We'll go through the list and see what we can do to improve on this.

Gotta say that the drums seem mixed way too far in the background on this one. Also, there's a mid freq that is pretty consistently too prominent in the guitars and vocals. Probably somewhere between 4 and 700hz, probably. I'd love to hear this remixed. Gotta get rid of that drummer, too. He has no idea what he's doing. :spank:

Sounded good to me. You cant go wrong with that mic and pre. I've used both. Very clean, flat sound in a good way. I can see adding a bit more HPF but the over all tone is very pleasant to me. Nice fit for your voices and genre.

I agree with Jimmy and Chili. Drums and bass need the most work. Some vocal pitchiness, but I'm the last guy that should harp on that.

On the plus side, the tone of the vocal track seems really nice to me. Smooth and rich.

Thanks Jason, PDP and Greg.... We've done some mix adjustments but still have to do more plus some vocal track changes. We'll keep your latest suggestions in mind as we go along. We'll post an update soon as we can...
