i just purchased a sm86 mic. i have it hooke in to the phntom in the "input" and a female-xlr to the "output" going to the DMP3 preamp. Then i have the monster cable hooked from the preamp to the computer(not in the interface though)

Do i need a MAudio Delta 66 Audio Interface to hear the mic?

alltogether i have

a preamp

xlr-xlr cable
female xlr cable
power phantom
and a monster studio link cable

its pretty hard to follow your post. Just hook the mic cable to the mic and the input of the dmp3. Then from the output of the dmp3, go to your soundcard.

i tried that and i didnt get any sound. before purchasing all this stuff the mic could be heard but barely.

Go to Amazon.com, type "Home Recording" into the search bar and drop $20 on a basic recording book.... all will be explained to you.

What kind of soundcard? Some (SB Live, for example) are installed with the Line In disabled as a recording input by default.

im using realtek ac97 audio soundcard to record. when i plug it into the "input line" i cant get sound from the speakers nor can i record it. when i hook it to the "mic input" i can hear it from the speakers but cant record it. i am using Magix Audio Studio 2004 Deluxe

i have everthing recording but now i cant get the mic to record in the right speaker.

I am having the same exact problem... Same sound card and everything...

It's very frustrating

i have the same soundcard, and i get things recorded and playback fine. but my vocal recordings sound different and semi transformed then they should be... and it seems as though theres some kind of mic pre amp already on this soundcard because it clips my recordings as well quite easily.
