Everytime I try to record with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 on my eMachines 6811 (brand new) laptop, the volume level is so low that it's impossible to record. I've used several different mics (including a Shure) and it's the same problem on all of them. I've turned the volume up on the mic, with mic boost on, and everything. It's a little louder when I choose stereo mix and mono mix, but they aren't good enough. It worked fine on my older Toshiba laptop... the soundcard on this laptop is a Realtek AC97. I guess it's not good enough for recording.

Is there a way to fix this problem, or at least an alternative?? It's important because my band needs to record practices and demos, and we were able to fine before, but now we can't. Any help would be apprecated.

Hey Butch-1, I'm a little confused, just because on the product information on that soundcard, all the diagrams and info say it goes FROM a sound source (laptop, PC) TO speakers or headphones. Will the soundcard go the other way, from a sound source INTO the computer?

It certainly does appear to do everything you want except record....

http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/IndigoIO/index.php is worth a look but it requires a line-level input from a mixer - but frankly that's almost a prerequisite for a decent mic preamp, and going that route (using a mixer and plugging that into your existing soundcard set for line level) might be the way to go.

Or there's the M-Audio Duo - see http://emusician.com/recording/emusic_maudio_duo_quattro/ - this has preamps built in.

Also consider the Soundblaster Extigy 2, the Edirol UA-1x, or the UA-1000.

I haven't used any of these myself, I'm just relaying info from elsewhere, where end users did recomment these devices. But ideally, purchase from someone who would take it back if it proved not compatible with your setup.
