I'm having trouble installing sonar onto my computer. I attempt to install it, and a message pops up that says that I need directX 8.1 to use sonar, and that I should click next to install directX. When I click next, it seems to be installing directX, but after doing a search, I discovered that it only creates an empty folder titled "Directx". I then have the exact same problem when I try to install sonar again.
I also installed directx from another source, and the same error message came up when I tried installing sonar again.
Has anyone encountered this problem before or does anyone know what I can do to fix it? I would really appreciate any input.

It sounds like you might already have DirectX 9.0 installed (it is the most current version).

The way to find out your current version is to do the following:

How do I find out which version of DirectX is installed?

Use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to determine the version of DirectX that is installed on your computer. Follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then select Run from the menu.
2. Type dxdiag, and then click OK .
3. On the System tab, note the version of DirectX displayed on the DirectX Version line.
4. When you are finished checking file versions, click Exit .

The work around for this can be found here:

Let us know how you go.

That was the problem, thank you so much for your help. Faster than I ever imagined, too. I followed the advice on the website that you suggested, and Cakewalk installed perfectly. I'll be making music all night.. Thanks again.
