i need some advice on practicing these. I can do doubles, but I would like to be able to do triples while doing fills on the rest of the drums. What would be the best way to work up that speed?
Metronome!
Start at slow tempo's and increase by 5 or 10 BPM.
I'm assuming that these will be triplet subdivisions, so if you have a 'nome that will subdivide for you, set it on the triplet subdivisions so you can really get a feel for how it feels.
Then increase the tempo.
You really need a strong double stroke. Try a double beat exersice. one measure for each hand. Like this...
dada dada dada dada da da
r r r r r r r r r r
on R once then L...keep on doing this to a nome!!
Build up that second beat in your double!! try the same exersice with these accents
daDA daDA daDA daDA da da
make sure the accents are STRONG..almost full stroke if you can and try to build up to that. non accented strokes at a tap height level. around 3". Try from 80bpm to what ever you can go. Make sure it is dead on time at slow speeds before you try fast. Solid Strokes!!!!
Now try a grid... one beat of 16th's then another w/ diddled 16th's. Some thing like that...make sure everything is steady and strong.
Now a triplet grid. try 2 triplets normal then 2 diddled. Try diffrent ways to do it. Do it reallllly slow for a while then speed up. You show have some nice clean triplet rolls
I have found flam taps to be a good way to build up triple stroke techniques. (lR R rL L lR R rL L) The grace note on the beat actually makes the third stroke. Start slow building the tempo until you reach top speed (without falling apart) then slowly drop the tempo . . . rinse and repeat.
