first of all, i´m not use to write or speak in english but i hope you´ll understand

I record and edit in cubase 2.2 something and I´ve understood that you can trig midi with a audio track, for example a sampled kickdrum kicking in instead of the analog recorded kickdrum. And there should be a way not only to replace the trigging audio into a sample or midi, but also mix theese two sounds (recorded trigging audio track AND the sample-track) ANYONE that know how to do this?

I´ve also heard/read/picked up somewhere that you can "cut" one audio track also using some kind of triggervalue... for example muting the bassgutiartrack with the attack from the kickdrum-track (the attack of kick mutes the bassguitar for a moment) to make an illusion of tight play and it should work out pretty well, so i´ve heard...

I think both my concerns could be pretty useful, and maybe you´ll help alot of us don´t know "the magic" yet if you have a clue... please write!

thanx / samuel the swede

Check out KTDrumtrigger, it is a free drum trigger that can trigger a kick drum off an audio track.

ok! i made my first sidechaining in cubase yesterday, and it works!
It´s easier to check it out if you know what to call it -SIDECHAINING! (and not triggering, so thanx trickster!) :D

If anyone s intrested how to, I got REALLY simple manuals in like 6-7 steps using waves c1 comp cs to sidechain in cubase.

I tried drumagog as well, and i´ll try KTdrumtrigger later. The demo version didn´t allow me using my own samples and it got really corny sounds so it wasn´t an apetizer really... I guess its way better when you put your own sample to the beat.

thanks again

KtDrumtrigger will let you trigger LM4 samples, or your own custom samples.

KT is working perfeC! Thanks!

How do you change the trigged sound into samples?

I am not sure what you mean, but if you mean how do you trigger the LM-4 drum machine using KT trigger, here is the short version:

1.set Kt drum trigger on your kick track, and tweak it until it is picking up ONLY the kick hits.
2. in KTDrum trigger, change the midi note number to 36
3. add the LM4 as a vst intrument
4. add a midi track
5.set the midi track to take kt trigger as an input, and use the LM-4 for output
6.click the "monitor" button on the midi track, and mute the old kick track

thats it

Oh, ok I mean my own custom samples like a snare that I´ve cut out from another recording that I like or something like that. Is that possible? Maybe its in the LM4 directory I have to make changes, not in KTdrumtrigger? To get it more authentic than the lm4 sounds...

Again, thanks for the info about KT!

You'd need a sampler. Get a simple sampler VSTi (something like this - not tried but seems to do the trick) and route the KT midi output into that, and you can choose any sound you like.

Also, I have heard from a friend that you can make custom LM-4 banks with your own custom samples, but I have not had a chance to experiment with that myself.

Is KTDrumTrigger velocity sensitive?? will it pick up different intensity on the hits and transfer it properly to MIDI or will it convert all the hits to 127 velocity???

You can, but as far as I know (and I've tried it), you can only link one sample to one note, you can not use multiple velocity layers.

ok! How do I do that? Does it means that I can link my own recorded sound, for example a snare and exchange it? what does "multiple velocity layers" mean?

it means that individual samples can be assigned to velocity ranges. for example, you could record a few samples of your snare drum, a soft hit, a medium hit, and a hard hit. then you would assign each sample to a midi velocitiy range of a specific midi note. what this does is change the sample that's triggered, depending on how hard you strike your midi controllers trigger device (key, pad, edrum).

with a sampler that supports multiple velocity layers and a bunch of samples, you can create a very realistic sounding virtual instrument, drums for example. the weaknesses here seem to be the triggering method and any latency introduced by the sampler plugin.

Travis is spot on about the velocity layers.

I think your best bet would be going to kvraudio.com, and do a search for drum samplers. Be sure to only search for freeware ones, there are plenty out there. They all do what de LM4 does, but (much) better, and with the option to load your own samples. The LM4 is pretty limited, you will see that very soon if you use a better one.

Welcome to the world of sampling :)
