What i (and by i mean my drummer wants) is a simple solution so he can trigger 1 sample at a time, maybe 2 if its just as easy.

What i think i need is any cheapo drum trigger pad, and some kind of sampler(if i'm right then this is what i need help with).

I think this is an option: http://www.roland.co.uk/products/productdetails.aspx?p=537

But i wondered if theres a cheaper way of doing it. Certainly don't need 9 triggers, option of having 2 might be nice but never 9.

I think it might help a little if I explain my live setup to you.

The most effective (and cheapest,if you have a laptop already) method for me is to bring my laptop. I just stick a cheapo voice recorder mic into my kick and run it to my Mbox into Reaper. (The Mbox is not totally necessary, you could just use your laptop's line in I supposed if it's fast, but the Mbox has very low latency with my machine and I like having the input level knobs at easy reach.) From there I'm using the drum trigger to MIDI plugin that comes with reaper and setting it to trigger a DFH kick with a layer of sine wave synth under it to give it a little more low end. It triggers perfectly for me, and I've been using it for quite some time now. Of course, you can trigger whatever you want, I mean, you could get crazy and just mount the mic with a tennis ball over it and hit that to trigger some samples. I sometimes use my other Mbox input to do this as ridiculous as it sounds. With a free plugin like "Round Robin Hood" you can even trigger 4 samples in succession with one mic.

Lately I've been wanting more pads to trigger with so I bought a Yamaha DD55, which is almost a toy, but its got velocity sensitivity and MIDIi out so that gives me a lot more options for triggering samples too, and I picked it up on craigslist for $60. Basically, if you have a laptop already and aren't scared of that whole can of worms, you can trigger samples live very affordably.
