Triggering Drum Sounds

Okay, so say I had a snare drum, but I wanted to when recorded sound like a different more expensive snare drum.

What all do I need? Is there a way that I can mic that drum, and in my DAW I can set a threshold that when reached a sample of the nicer snare is played instead of the recorded track?

If you've already recorded the snare and you don't like it the easiest way to fix it would be to use Drumagog
 
I'm voting for slate digital trigger over drumagog, because that whole side chain deal should have been thought of sooner.
 
So would you recommend using drumagog? Or should I look into the slate thing you mentioned?
Also, if there is something that will do the same thing but is free, I'd prefer that haha
