I have a chance to buy either. Both are in great shape, price is not an issue. I record pop/rock acts. Which board has the better pres, eq, etc for this type of music? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark

If money is no issue get a Trident 80, a Neve, a SSL or Neotek.

Um lemme think...... get the Trident. What you are comparing there is a remote control car to a Lexus.

when you say money is no option, are you under the assumption that those are two of the best consoles out there? You are in for a real shocker.

between those two.........TRIDENT

Thanks for the replies...
I've read posts elsewhere that state that compared to the A range the VFM series by Trident was horrible. But compared to a Mackie? Not sure... Anyone out there used both?

Yeah, exactly...

Price a Euphonix sometime Mr. Big Spender. :)

I can't give you a direct comprison of the VFM to the "A" range console. Consider though that the "A" range is VERY expensive and very hard to find. Also, the Trident A Range console is a very coveted desk. Many people place those consoles in their top 5 console list of all time. But, compared to a Mackie, i cannot see how you could possibly go wrong. The biggst thing to worry about would be the availability and price of both parts and technicians, and what kind of condition it is in. In the end a Mackie is more useful than a broken Trident.

I've heard that Trident VFM's are equivalent roughly to a Trident 65. Which means it's miles away from top of the line Tridents, but probably far above the Mackie.

Personally I think the Trident 65's are decent mid-priced consoles that have enough of the Trident magic to be cool. Definately better than a Soundcraft Ghost!

Notbradsohner, you're right. What I should've said was they are both fairly priced for their condition. Anybody else had experience with a Trident VFM compared to Mackie 24X8?

Even if it "only sounds like a series 65" , that is still a HUGE jump in quality. The Trident will be built better, have better faders, have better preamps, have better EQ's, have a better summing bus, will look better. The only thing that I can see the Mackie having is maybe more aux sends, and a smaller form factor.
