Hello all,

Here's what I need to do. I have an old mono recording on cassette tape of my father in law singing in church. He's been gone now for almost ten years now and every year around the holidays my wife likes to get it out and listen to it.

What I want to do for her is to transfer it on to a CD somehow. Its an old scratchy recording so I'm not too worried about high end recording equiptment. I have a cd burner and a good cassette player in my home entertainment system. I have tried to use the sound recorder that comes with Windows 2000 but it will only record for 60 seconds at a clip. What I did was to use a cable that plugs into the output of the tape deck and into the mic input jack on my computer.

This will be a one time thing, I don't plan on recording this way again, so I'd like to find some freewear or inexpensive softwear somewhere. ANY suggestions will be greatly appriciated.

Hello,

This will be a perfect gift for your wife! I did a similar thing for a buddy of mine.
You may need a preamp to boost the signal (maybe your home stereo system would serve this function.) For software, I used Cakewalk Sonar...but you could use any digital audio recording software. I think that you can get a basic version of n-tracks as a free download. Do a search for it. Within that, you would have built-in eq if needed.
Also, cd burning programs like Cakewalk Pyro or Steinberg Clean have pop, click and hiss filters to remove unwanted noise from tape and vinyl. There are other "off the shelf" programs that will work, too. They have them at CompUSA.

Good luck, and definitely do it! Your wife and her family will appreciate it beyond measure.

60 seconds

If you stay with windows recorder, here's how to get around the 60-second limit. Record 60 seconds of nothing, then copy it onto itself until it is the right length. I have almost no experience with this, but I have a bunch of tapes (and LPs) I want to digitize. I have heard the the default on Windows is for a very low level of quality, and that you have to go into options to select CD quality.

After you've tried it, please let us know what you did, and how it came out.

They have a TON of freeware/shareware.

Peace...
