I have a vast library of master recordings made on an old Tascam and would like to transfer each recording to digital format. I would like to preserve separation of each track while saving to the digital format. Are there any recommendations on the type of software and hardware necessary to pull this off?

Thanks for your input,

Bill

you need a soundcard.. probably the one you have in your computer already will be fine..

as far as software goes , sound forge xp is great for what you want to do.. download the demo from www.sonicfoundry.com and play with it.. it sells for about US $50.. im sure there are also freeware programs floating around that can do this too , but i dont know of any off hand..

as far as the connections go , all you need to do is hook the line out of your tascam into the line in of your soundcard , start the tape , click record in your software , then edit the file afterwards.. then just burn it to cd-r. simple as that.. although you may need to go to radio shack to purchase the correct adapter plugs.. ( ie rca to 1/8 inch ) ..

hope this helps..

Hey Bill,
What kind of TASCAM? if you want to preserve the separation of the tracks, the TASCAM has to have individual outs for each track and your interface would have to have as many ins. My 388 has them and I wanted to do something similar, but not using a computer. I wanted to run my old tapes through my digital mixer to a DA-38 and then make CD's. I took a 8 ch. snake from the individual outs on the 388 to 8 individual ins on my mixer. Worked fine, had my channel separation so I could re-mix and burn to CD, but you know what? I had been using my new digital set up for about 6 months when I decided to do this... I was used to the clean of digital and I was so bothered by the tape hiss, I decided just to re record everything in the digital domain.

I am not trying to discourage you from doing it, I just don't want you to get your hopes up like I had mine. I just wanted mainly to address the channel separation issue. It is possible, depending on what gear you have.

Eddie N...Great software...no recording allowed on demo version? Weird stuff.
