I transfered via ethernet cable from my alesis hd 24 to my computer, then into sonar XL. When I play the tracks back some of the tracks are not in sync. Whats up??

When you say out of sync, do you mean they start out together but drift apart over time? Or do you mean one is consistently off a few milliseconds from the other?

If the latter, are you importing them at the same start time into Sonar?

Well, when I transfer them via ethernet cable from the alesis and play them back, some tracks are WAY off in time. Like 10 seconds or something like that. Way wackey. I may at times not have been at the begining of the song in Sonar. I am very new at this Sonar thing. I just started working with it. I tranfered yesterday another song and it played fine. The guitar at Guiter Center says I need something like a Motu 2408...another $1000.00. I like I dont unless I want to move the tracks real fast. Jim

Sounds like you have used tracks of different sample rates....

It's pretty much a given that you can't mix sample rates of individual tracks within a multi-track project.

My sampl;e rates should all be the same. I transfered all the tracks from a project just recorded on the alesis hd 24. I never changed settings and like I said when I tried it again all seemed fine!! Whats up? This should all transfer correctly right? with the ethernet cable from the computer and the alesis?

10 secs sounds pretty amazing to me...

Now are you damn shure they start at the same time?

Jim, you really have to stop listening to the guitars. They don't have a clue what they're talking about. I find the snare drums to be much more knowledgable myself.

BTW, you never really answered my question. Does the degree they are out of sync increase as the song goes on. In other words, the tracks start out close to being in sync, but are 10 seconds out of sync by the end. Or are they 10 seconds out for the entire song?

Bruce's guess sounds pretty reasonable to me. Particularly if we're talking 48 vs 44.1 sample rates. Particularly if the problem worsens, the further you get into the song.

Opps!!! Im an idiot!!! The "guys" at guitar center...see what you get when your in a hurry. From what I can tell, the sync. is out the same the whole song. I still dont understand the sample rate thought. All the tracks were recording at the same time on the alesis hd24 48.1(or whatever that exact rate is!!)

I'm not sure why they'd be out of sync but if it's not a sample rate thing, you can just drag them back into sync in Sonar. Also, while I use a MOTU 2408 with my HD24, it's not nessassary to make transfers at all. Don't let them talk you into buying something you don't need, especially $1000 items.

As Track Rat said, if they are consistently out of sync by the same amount, you should be able to align them manually. You can use the "slide" command for this to do very fine adjustments. Probably best to work one track at a time. i.e., get two tracks aligned before you import the third.

What you might also try is importing the tracks starting at the second measure instead of the first. Set your "Snap To" grid to full measure, and put the cursor at the start of the second measure. Import your tracks at that point. I'm not sure this will help, but it's worth a try.

The other thing, if you know the BPM of the project from your Alessis, it might help to set the same BPM in Sonar before doing the import. Again, this shouldn't really affect anything, but what the H.

Thanks everyone.I think one thing I did wrong is I played a few of the tracks before I finished importing all the tracks. The little "slider" at the top which shows the predression of the tune was in the middle after I listened to about 8 tracks inported, then I imported more. I think this is why it was off. Make sense????

That would explain it exactly.
Still curious, how many tracks can you transfer at once?
Doing them in mass or even groups of eight would be nice.

I can transfer all the tracks (24 if I like) from the hd24 to the computer at once. I takes about 15 minutes. Then I move them one at a time to Sonar. Hey, When I mix a song, why cant I put it right on CD with my in computer CD burner??? I cant get it to do it!! Jim

You need to export the mix as a RIFF-wave (select the whole song and File -> Export), and remember to burn the CD as an Audio-CD. ;)
