Hi!

I have Adobe Audition and Cakewalk 4 Producer Edition. (Which is easier for this?)

I have some songs I recorded, and I want to email the zip file of songs to someone. Before I do this, I want to know how I can make sure all of the songs are equal volume. Is there something I can do on Adobe Audition or Cakewalk4 to make sure all of these songs are equal volume? I need some tips/advice...

Thanks in advance!

Throw them all into one project of your DAW. Put each tune on it's own track. Solo one of the tracks and hit play. While it plays flick between solod tracks and adjust the volume accordingly.

Or you can normalise, but I personally don't like the results yielded by doing it that way.

Nodding in direction, then ignoring, fact that perceived loudness is a function of non linear interaction among a lot of elements, total RMS power, average RMS power, peak RMS power describes one; humans tend to interpret loudness of different frequencies in different ways, it is unlikely that a selection that attempts to preserve some natural dynamics will ever seem as loud as one processed for commercial radio (for example) . . . ; etc.

That said, if there are a lot of files, time is short and you just want to nudge the group of files in general direction of similar level, Audition has a group normalize function, or additionally you can batch process . . . I think it ships with a script to normalize to 0 dB but you can easily create a script processing one file or a portion of one file to -.3 dB and run that on the rest of the batch

Do not clip the tracks. SO make sure that if you like to even those volumes it should not be above 0dB (maximum peak signal) or to make it safe, around -1dB maximum peak, to have some space.

What is the purpose of making all songs in equal volume? Is it for mixing? , for mastering ?or for someone to listen a complete track?.. Increasing volumes is different in these areas such as :

if the track is for mixing, you should not compress it or apply any volume but you have to ensure , it is well recorded, noise free and effects free. If it is for mastering, give it around at most -1dB maximum peak. If it is for listening, then you can set a target average RMS power..Normally it is around -13dB average RMS power (for whole track)...
Setting a target average RMS power can only be done safely in a normalization stage of a mastering process, in order to avoid over-compression which also deteriorates sound quality.
