Can anyone kindly explain to me whether or not it's possible to Track and monitor vocals with effects and compression on it? In other words, I want to record the Dry Vocals but be able to have the singer (and myself) hear more or less what it's going to sound like as they're recording. I think this would be something cool if it can be done especially for those annoying clients who don't know how to listen to a dry recording without making one of these faces... :(

By the way I'm using an aardvark lx6 with breakout box.. plus I have a little samson mixpad 12 which I been using as a headphone amp but I'm thinking may be useful for doing this.. Let me know guys.. thanks!

Yeah... Turn on monitoring for the channel that you are recording to.
The little button that looks like a speaker on each channel.

if you mixer has inserts...here's what you have to do:

Plug the microphone into a free mixer channel that has a preamp.

Plug a 1/4" patch cable HALFWAY (first click) into the insert for that mixer chanel (Usually on the back).

Plug the other end into the aardvark.

What this does is take your vocal signal to the aardvark after the mixer pre amp, but BEFORE the EQ, Fader etc.

So you set your recording level only with the preamp "trim", not with the fader.

Now when you monitor the vocals through that mixer, you can contol the headphone volume with the fader without affecting the signal going to the aardvark.

From here, aux send the vocal to your compressor/effects and they will be returned to the headphones, but not to the recorder.

why dont he just use the insert effects and monitor those , then he can just turn them on and off as he pleases. why go thru all that other stuff?

You say nothing about what your using to record. On my system it's easy as hell to do what you describe. Depending on what you have it may or may not be possible.

Oh yeah sorry about that.. yeah I use Cubase 2.0 right now.. even though I might be switching up soon.. It doesn't seem to be very "hyperthreading" friendly... either that or my soundcard.. but anyways thats another topic.. =0/
