I want to get a 8i/o soundcard without preamps. So I'm going to need a mixer. The thing is, I've never tracked with a mixer before, so I don't know much about mixers at all. What will I need in my mixer to get 8 mics onto sperate tracks into my DAW? 8 buses? 8 aux outs? I'm looking to get a mackie first off, because they seem cheap and reliable, so could I get suggestions of a mixer I'll need. I don't need effects or anything just preamps, so I don't need a real fancy one. Thanks for any help.....or should I get one of the Presonus 8 channel preamps? What willI be missing out on with the preamp that I can do on the mixer?

A good alternative to the Mackie would be Soundcraft Spirit M-series.. People around here seem to like them more than Mackie.

You could also look into a Focusrite Octopre. That might be just what you need.

Here is another option.......

This is definitely NOT the most reliable piece if equipment, but you can get cheap, very cheap (about $100.00 USD).

The Tascam TM D-1000

It'll give you 8 LINE INS, and it will give you 8 bi-directional TDIF's to and from your computer/board.

Here is a link to a user group.

justwantyou2kno, what is your bucget?

Well the soundcraft M-8 is $550...but I don't think I asked my question right. Basically I'm asking if I need a mixer, or if getting 8 preamps will be good enough. I originally didn't want to use a mixer because they're intimidating, but I'm thinking they will give me more options. And on a side note, can plug a mic directly into the delta 1010 and get signal? I was reading you couldn't, I just figured I could plug a mic into it, but just not get a hot signal.

If you plug a mic directly into the card, all you'll doing is adding a lot of noise from having to crank up the trim because there is not enough signal for the sound card.

You need a stand-alone pre-amp to use with the sound card if you don't use a mixer with on-board pre's.

Well it looks like I'm going to get the Soundcraft M-8 soon. I'll to learn how to use the mixer with my 4in 8out card and then buy a delta 1010. Does this sound like a good plan? A set-up of the M-8 and the 1010 seems like it will be more versatile then the Q10 right?

And one more newbie question, is there something on the M-8 where I can send each of the 1010's outputs into, then send to headphones. So I can control how much of each output will be put through the headphones.
