has anyone heard of the method of controlling your eq by recording different freqencies to different tracks, like for instance, 1 bass drum mic, recorded to six different tracks, all with different eq setups, to maximize something or other?

the guy I was talking to about this (seemingly crazy idea, involving a hundred channel board with at least 8 busses) swore up and down that this was the way you got digital to sound as big and robust as analog.

i'll probably screw around with the concept later, just wondering if anyone had heard of it.

Surely there are easier ways to do it! I guess if you have a) endless time on your hands, and b) not a clue about mic placement, this would be a great way to go.

A lot of people in the 80s used to do this with bass amps. the bass was fed into a crossover then sent to 2 (or 3) different amps and cabinets. 1 for the lows (lots of power) 1 for the highs (not so much). That way you could compress and otherwise play with one without messing up the other. It is a very good idea, but in practice it didn't work very well for most people. Without more fiddling than it was worth, you had a hard time getting one coherent sound. As far as using this type of thing to make digital sound like analog, I think your friend might be pulling your leg. Any way, by the time you spent your money on a 100 channel console, you could have bought an analog tape deck and been done with it.
