Recovering Gear-aholic
I just got a Realistic TR 3000 R2R off of Craigslist...figured for $20 I can take the hit if it's junk. The unit looks great cosmetically, but needs a belt. I seem to recall that this is a Teac made machine, basically a re-branded...is it an X-3?? Any help on the right model number crossover so I can get a belt from Teac would be great..

Observation:
I have several "A" series Teacs and a few Tascams, and the are of a high build quality...stainless steel/ diecastings/ heavy motors and generally very solid construction. The TR 3000 seems to be built like a cheap VCR. All plastic and crap. Was this where Teac ended up?? I won't know what it sounds like until I get a belt on it, but compared to my other machines it feel like a throw-away. Hmmmmmm

The Realistic TR3000 is basically a TEAC X-3 in disguise with some improvements. The belts, pinch roller and other parts (except for the buttons) are the same. It’s a low cost machine, but for what it is, it’s not bad. In fact some of the improvements TEAC made on the TR3000 were later introduced with the TEAC X-300.

I have an old friend that was with RadioShack from the early days. He said they used to make specific recommendations to manufacturers and would have products made to their own specifications, different and even better than the original. Thus the TR3000 has round buttons instead of rectangular because they thought they would be easier on the fingers. They also specified the silver knobs with grooves for easy manipulation, and tighter tolerances spec wise. The TR3000 is more or less a tricked out version of the X-3, a little closer to the X-300.

Thanks....An X-3 belt it is then.

I'll be interested to see how this unit sounds and performs. As i indicated, it just seems to be rather, well, cheaply built
