i went and visited Guitar Center the other day.
Boy I was in for a suprise.
I've been wanting a Hammond clone for a long time, and they had the Hammond XK-3, which is definitely one of the best.
I was actually a bit suprised to find that the left set of drawbars controls the upper manual, and the right is the lower. For some reason, I always thought it was the other way around on the original Hammond models--this is how it works in NI's B4 softsynth. (Could someone who has played a Hammond clarify?)
Anyways, it sounded pretty good to me, though I had a difficult time distinugishing the drawbars from the presets... The presets do not make the drawbars move (which I expected them to for some reason), so it is difficult to tell what is really pulled out. Also the Leslie emulator seemed to be to fast on the fast setting. Perhaps just user-related problems from being a floor model?
Then I found that they had the Nord line, and I instantly tried out the Nord Electro 2 seventythree. It's got a gorgeous sound, but makes me feel pretty good about my Kurzweil ME1's patches, though I found I got much more variation in dynamic response out of the Electro than my Kurzweil.
The organ portion sounded slightly louder than the previous setting to piano, and I'm not sure how authentic Nord's reputation is for Hammonds as opposed to Electric Pianos.
I might feel weary about buying something that only does 7 instruments, even if it does it well, when I've planned on upgrading my current setup to a Kurzweil PC2 w/ O & CK ROMs.
Comments or suggestions?
