totally new to it all, needs help!!

hi everyone,

i'm a singer-songwriter. i have been recording and performing live for years but have always been lucky enough to work with professional sound engineers: in the past, all i had to do was show up, step in the booth and sing into the mic. i really want to set up a home recording studio.... i have NO idea at all what is needed! does any one have the time and patience to help me figure out the basics? my goal is to be able to record a CD, and everything can be synthesized sound besides my voice (maybe later i'd like to be able to record live instruments too). Thank you so much for your help guys!!!!!!!
