Totally Clueless Question

Hello All,

I have a 'totally clueless person' question for you guys with some savvy. Is is possible to capture and save audio from the web onto the computer? I can make copies of audio CD's and such, but there are times when listening to audio portions of the internet, that I would like to record to refer back to at another time.

Is this possible. For example, there might be an interesting interview on CNN. If I wanted to record or save it to my computer for my own use (as a reference or archive) at a later time, is there a way to do it?

Many thanks for any helpful hints you might have.

Depending on your operating system and the program you're using to record, usually, you can select "Stereo Mix" (some go by other similar names) from your audio mixer (Volume Control, options, properties, recording) Then hit Record in your audio app. This will record everything that's coming out of your sound card.

As with any recording program, you'll have to test & tweak the volume levels to get a good signal that's not too loud, not too soft.

Also, there are a bunch of shareware programs out there that do the same thing. I can't think of any right now, but you can do a google search and come up with bunches, I'm sure.

Incidentally, this is one of the things that amazes me with all of the copy protection efforts that record companies keep pursuing. I've never played an audio signal of any kind through the internet that I couldn't record as a wav file, nor do I think there will ever be one. ...seems like all the copy protection is kind of pointless (as a musician, it's a bit disheartening, but true).

THANK YOU

SeanMorse - Thank You!!! I am feeling pretty stupid right now, but Oh, well, that's what Newbie sections are all about. My problem was that I was searching Google and ZDNet with the wrong words - you gave me the clue - 'audio mixers'. Lo and behold, there's one installed on my computer (must have been predelivered). I'm going to give it a try right now.

I agree on your comments on the difficulty of protecting recordings. My better half is a musician, so I can empathize. I guess I am too gullible - I believe that people will police themselves for the most part. For example, I needed this bit of technological know-how to prepare a presentation, and need to include a 15-second sound bit that I've heard on the web, but couldn't figure out how to save. However, if I go to the web and listen to a piece of music that I like, I will try to find it in the store and purchase it, if I like it. I do, however, like being able to sample before I purchase. Much of the music that I like is not available in the US, so before I pay import prices, I want to make sure that I like it!

Anyway, thanks a million. I'll give you a shout if I can't make a go of this.

No prob. Total Recorder is the name of the one that I used to use, back in the Win98se days. I had much more important things to use it for ...like sampling Simpsons sounds to my Windows events "DOH!" :)

IT WORKED!!! I am absolutely thrilled - and my presentation will be completed on time. Thank you again. FYI...the 'pre-delivered' (which works just fine for my needs) is 'Creative' by SBLive. It was free, so I won't argue!
