well, maybe not totally.. i've been a drummer for 17 years and've been in plenty of situations where i've had to learn about this but this is the most extreme by far.

i managed, last summer, to score a room in a house in fantastic Brighton, MA., where my landlord, a bassist who has played with the likes of the Descendants and Aimee Mann.. among others.. basically gave me free will to do whatever i wanted to do with the basement here. i spent MONTHS just cleaning the area out and making space for my new band to practice. the area was so fucked up that it took me months to get it to a place where we had a computer set up with internet access.. a stereo that could be plugged in to the internet, cds, tapes, you name it. we went for the majority of the winter without a single complaint regarding how loud we can get. one of my neighbors apparently got pissed off at some point, to the extent that the last time i went down to do some light drum work on my own the cops were beating down my door within 20 minutes. i'm not even kidding. this was at 2pm on a sunday. prior to that the cops showed up while the singer and one of the guitarists and i were somewhat quietly working on a new song at 5:45pm on a weekday. obviously i have a neighbor who totally fucking hates music.

SO, such that we can get back to writing music in the future the only options are getting a practice space or soundproofing my basement. obiously soundproofing my basement is the better and cheaper alternative over time. if any of you have an interest in providing ideas i did take some pics of the space after completely clearing it of our gear a few nights ago. it's an OLD house, built in 1925, so the ceiling wiring and piping is just nuts. i know i'm pretty much going to have to build a room within a room, but i don't really know how to make that happen. 8)

Ok, where are they? How about a floor plan with dimensions too and a height dimension? Any furnaces, windows, stairs, ducts etc? How close is the neighbors? How about the walls themself? What are they made of and how much is below grade? Is the slab ok? no cracks? Any posts? Tell us everything you can.

In the meantime, read this. A room within a room requires a floating floor. You may not need it.

Considering what it REALLY takes to isolate typically 110db drums, especially with close INTOLERANT neighbors, and old house with many variables, and you are NOT the owner, I'd tend to agree with Supercreep.
