Just found out a book written specifically on this subject. Most of us here already have a MySpace site. But I was glad to see how it can used to generate a greater fan base and sales. Some great music marketing ideas. Check it out and tell me what you guys think as well.

checked the page out, haven't read the book

myspace is definitly a good way to promote yourself and your music though!

We promote my band (RIP) there and we got a full of unknow fans all around Quebec (where I was living) who were saying that they love our music. So I think it's a awesome place to get your music known!!!

Unfortunately, the recording was a poor quality.. so don't take time to analyse the recording please haha!! ;)

myspace is good in a way but at the same time 90% of people on there are trying to make friends and date. And how many people when there looking for a cd go to myspace. I have a couple myspace sights ranging from 500-2500 views and never sold a song on there. It might help that people see you in the forums or bullentins establish a identity but you will still be better off handing them a cd in person..

add me and check my group out you can promote your music there.

hey guys...

myspace has been very good to us ( bag of toys http://myspace.com/bagoftoysmusic ). we've sold WAY more CDs because of being on myspace. here are my suggestions to selling some shit through there...

1. make sure you music doesn't suck.

2. find successful bands in the same genre as you and take some time to simply "add" people who leave "comments" on those bands pages. this works well two ways...1. they're interested enough in that type of music to take the time to comment and 2. you know they've been on recently and not some old person that doesn't go on myspace anymore (if you decide to just blindly add from bands "friends" pages).

3. if people respond, and say "nice shit!" comment or message them back. remind them that if they like your tunes, they might like your whole cd. they remember that stuff, and we've had people buy CDs because they were impressed that we took the time to respond. obviously, if you're music sucks, no one's going to want one no matter how nice you are (see point 1)

4. and this is pretty important...make sure people can easily purchase your CD and make links to those places from your page. for example, we've got iTunes, CD Baby, PayPal (which are all easy as shit to set up.) among a bunch of other less known places.

5. this one drives me fucking crazy...do NOT be one of those bands that post a comment on bands comment areas saying shit like...

IF YOU LIKE THIS ARTIST, YOU'LL LOVE US!!
IF YOU LIKE THIS ARTIST, YOU'LL LOVE US!!
IF YOU LIKE THIS ARTIST, YOU'LL LOVE US!!
IF YOU LIKE THIS ARTIST, YOU'LL LOVE US!!
IF YOU LIKE THIS ARTIST, YOU'LL LOVE US!!
IF YOU LIKE THIS ARTIST, YOU'LL LOVE US!!

some bands "comments pages" are literally 75% of stupid ass comments like this, and most of them are idiots that'll post these shameless self promotion comments like 5 times a day. i'll occasionally open their pages to see if that shit's actually working, and i'd say 9/10ths of them are still only getting like 100 plays or less a day, while bands like us end up with anywhere between 600 and 1000 plays a day and we stay away from looking like a bunch of douche bags on every artists site.

I'm sure there are lots of other little things you can do. but you follow this stuff, you're music doesn't suck (and trust me most of the bands on myspace are just plain bad) and you'll do ok. the important thing is hitting your target markets, and hitting similar bands comments is about as good as you can get.

good luck!

Robertt8 and his band have been around here for a while and I have followed his posts. They are good examples of what it takes: actively WORkING myspace and promo in general. To get anything out of it takes a lot of hard work. Its a great tool if you use it right.

my exp with myspace is everyone is just trying to flame you.
In the rap forums people shit on rap. It doesnt make sense.
There only been a few people who realy listened to my music.
Most are flaming or promoting.

How did you get your music on iTunes? Any tips for selling mp3's? How many songs/CDs do you sell on iTunes?

Thank you.

We sent CD Baby our CD right around Jan 1st, so you can see how long it can take to get stuff up and out. It also took iTunes around 4 months to activate our account (which was annoying as hell), and we've only gotten one statement from them which i belive is only for about 2 weeks of that time (we went live part way through their reporting dates), but in those 2 weeks, we've sold 42 full albums in the US, 1 IN Canada, 1 in the UK, and the separate songs kind of went like this... one song we sold 20 of...the next was like 11, 10, 8, 7...bla, bla, bla... but the total was like $342 for that span. when you sell a full album, our net is $7.696 and one song is $0.637...

anyhoo, it's good to finally be up there on iTunes, as i think a lot more people these days are buying the music that way.

as for myspace, i'd simply take my advice from my first post at the top here.

oh, speaking of which, i was under the impression that iTunes didn't deal with individuals anymore, so i thought they MADE you go through another company like CD baby, but i could be wrong.

cheers, and good luck!

Thanks Robert for the good info. I am going through CDBaby, Amazon, Borders and the i-tunes type sites. I believe you are correct in that i-tunes doesnt deal with individuals, and shortly most of them wont because of overkill. Some sort of online distributor is needed.

Hey David!

I was about to ask you how you got on Amazon, as i looked into it a while back and it looked like kind of a pain in the ass, so i wrote it off. but just on a random whim, i put in "Bag of Toys" in the Amazon search and our CD is up there...hmmmm...not really sure how, but it is. it must be up through CD Baby i guess. kind of surprised, but that's cool...

LMAOOOO.

Oddly enough, the link you provided, is to my myspace page.
I accidentally started a regular page, instead of a music page.
By the time i figured out i couldnt switch it, I had nearly 200 friends.
I plan on deleting it. but for now ill let it sit incase people actually read that blog and stumble on to my music page.

lol, it's a small world indeed.
