I've been producing a lot this last year, and I came up with many good beats. I've met a few rappers around here, and about 4 who are really talented. I've been working with them, but they just can't keep up with me... They don't write fast enough, they don't seem to want to work on it as much as I do. I know it's probably tough to write good lyrics, but I mean... if you're not inspired or anything and you can't come up with more than 1 rough and unorganized song (meaning there is not much of a concept, only lines spoken without any interruption) in like... 3 months, and that I can come up with almost 30 beats in the same amount of time... I always have to push them, pay a lot of money for my equipment and mics, etc. They won't write anything if they don't have a beat to write to. I wanna take advantage of the fact that we're all young (we're all 17-18) and that we have a lot of free time to write and work on this. But if they can't keep up... it made me wonder: what are my possibilities? can i get some sort of a deal with a company if i'm only producing beats? or do you absolutely have to make a track with lyrics on it? i always told my friends that it didn't matter to me the first one who got a record deal, cause once one of them would make it, he'd all drag the others along. could it actually be me?

one word: MIXTAPE

Don't wait on anyone. Get your beats out to anybody who is willing to rap on 'em. Go to your local DJ's including the ones who only do house parties and pass them a tape. Get your beats on mixtapes, and don't let up. Maybe those cats who are sitting on they --- will realize how good they have it working with you. Then...make them work!

one of my friends also told me that i shouldn't wait for anyone and do my own business... i didn't really know how... in fact i don't even know what a mixtape really is hehe.

i hesitated at the beginning, but some really good dj around here who djs in about every club in the city, and even travels often to other countries (he's going to Bogota in 2 weeks) asked me recently for a couble of beats so he could put them in his mixes (like put vocals from songs that already exist on them, things like that.) well sounds like a good idea after all...

btw before i hand any tape or cd over... shouldn't I use any sort of protection? i already went to the post office to send a cd of my beats to myself, so i got back the package with an official day and time on it... is that enough?

I couldn't say whether that's enough protection for your music, cause I've never been in a copyright dispute. I have accepted the fact that if I do get robbed of a beat or two, I will have to turn it into a positive thing and just look at it as free advertising. I believe that should go both ways, too. That's why I don't have any qualms about sampling and all that. I'm not on the billboard top anything, so I'm not worried about any lawyers callin me. You shouldn't worry about people stealing your music, cause most people are good hearted about the credits. The few who will jerk you will get theirs in the end. Remember it's your talent that they can't reproduce. If they hit with your beat, best believe they'll be back like pookie in new jack.
